Thanks for all the wonderful answers. I was afraid that she was trying to "find home". My vet told me that people here will take purebred cats and sell them, so I am going to put up posters(in Italian) and offer a reward. Maybe I will get her back that way!

It sounds strange for a female to do that, but I don't know. I have had it happen to me twice with un-neutered male cats before but it was in the same small town. When we moved to another neighborhood and took the outside male cat he ran back to the old neighborhood. One wasn't very far away, the other was about 2 miles away and he found his way back to his old neighborhood. The previous neighbors said they would like to have him so we just let him stay since it was useless to try to move him. Our female cat adjusted just fine to the moves.

I'm sorry about your indoor cat of 8 years, she must have got really confused, you never can tell. Maybe someone else can give a better answer.

It's not unusual for cats to run away when the owner has moved home. It's their instinct to try to head back home. This is why it's advisable to keep a cat indoors for a few weeks, so it learns that this is now it's home. If your cat is not neutered it is also much more likely to roam.

Standard procedure when you've lost a cat or dog is to phone all the nearest vet surgeries and shelters and give your name and number and a description of the animal so they can notify you if she's handed in to them. Also posters with her picture on in as wide an area as you can will help.

Good luck!

She isn't used to being anywhere but your place in Virginia so she is going to try to find "home". You might want to put up "lost cat" posters around town and hope somebody has found her and has been trying to find you. Being that she was an inside cat, you need to hope she hasn't been ran over because she might not understand that running across the road is a bad thing. I don't mean to make you worry any more than you already are but there is always the chance. I had an outdoor/indoor cat that went missing and she ended up getting hit by a truck. I hope you find her!

She probably got scared. Cat usually adapt to one place and when you move them they become frightened. When my family moved from New Hampshire to Tennessee. We lost my cat, Paws at our new house in TN. We never found him. I still haven't gotten over him. If your cat has been gone for 2 weeks or less than, here is what you should do. Go to your local animal shelter, vet's office, and animal control center and put up flyers with a photo of your cat. If anyone has seen her they'll call you. Also hand out flyers to your neighbors and post them near your house. Good luck on finding your cat.

put up posters and leave out food for her maybe leave a window open for her, if she has been kept in for more than a couple of weeks then she will come back probable if you didnt keep her in then she might not come back. keep looking and dont give up sometimes they come back after months and months, must be scary in a foreign county all on her own though.

Make signs and hang them around town. Put an ad in the local newspaper. Leave some food and water out for her. she will come home

speaking as someone who has owned several cats over the years, cats don't adjust to change easily. your cat was probably feeling dislocated. possibly even angry at you for uprooting her. but on the upside, cats are very independent and reslient. she may return, in time. keep the faith..

Contact all shelters in your area. She probably was not used to the new house and chose to run.

be careful about putting food out... you could attract other rodents or other cats... plus if it is your kitty feasting... you leave them with no reason to come in the house. =)

Cats are sparkling animals. you notice it in the way they sparkling themselves and canopy their poo. finally they don't choose you to be caught with a rotting corpse. so they flow die the place you won't be able to locate them.
