Actually working on the street you have rookie officers, meaning they have less then year on the job and still on probation, officers, completed probation and been working for over a year. field training officers (FTO) officers with typically 3 to 7 years experience, then Sergeants, lieutenants, captains and the chief.
Some departments have different titles for the supervising staff but in general this is the most common break down for sworn police positions.

In some areas, you can start out as a Cadet. Then it can be recruit/probationary. As soon as you're sworn in, you are an Officer.
