I recently (in the past 3 months) started an a workout program where I life weights so heavy I can only do 1 set with 8-12 reps of any exercise. Recently, as I have been able to increase the amount I lift, I have had some really intense aches and tightness in my shoulders. Anyone have something similar happen? What could be the cause? What are some ways to alleviate this condition? I don't have sharp pains; just a dull ache and tightness.

I have to confess: I rarely stretch.

There are a lot of different things that could cause this. The main one that comes to mind is overuse. Are you working the same muscle groups consecutively?

Another issue is stretching. Be sure to warm up your muscles prior to doing heavy lifting, and stretch them out afterwards.

Finally, make sure your form is correct. Ask a trainer for help if you need. You may be putting undue strain on your joints that you could fix by making minor changes in your form.

By doing stretches in between exersices and drinking plenty of fluids. You have to stretch the muscle you just worked to allow it to relax, if it stays tight it wil knott up and actually look bad when it developes. You want to look smooth and toned, not bulky and balled up.

you are lifting too much weight. you need to build up your muscles more. you're going to damage your joints. also, give your muscles a rest every other day. when you lift weights, it causes small tears in the tissues, muscle and tendon. you need to give them at least a day to repair themselves before lifting again.
