As someone who is highly active in this ministry I can tell you it affects non-Christians just as much.
The issue is, non-Christians don't know how to go to a ministry to get help. Or they have been bullied and badgered by our Evangelical cousins so they are more afraid of stepping IN to a church - than they are of the possession.
How sad is that?
While people want to wash their hands of religion, they still have a deep hunger for connection to God. So they turn to "spiritism." That is mediums, seances, the occult. They end up opening a door they can't close. And inviting in something they never wanted.
I live in a very "open" and "liberal" area. So these things are very popular. As such, they make up for about 50% of the "problem" - if you can call it that.
Friend Vox? I beg to differ. While you're right that movies want to capitalize on the Rite of Exorcism - which is all "mysterious n stuff..." - it hasn't been used much lately. Back in the late 90s there were less than 6 active exorcists in the US. As of today there are closer to 600. That's a huge jump in such a short span.
Why?
One of the reasons Protestants split from the Catholic Church was because of its belief in healing from God and the Rite of Exorcism.
Slowly but surely, with the hope of unification, the church did away with these things. Then launched Vatican II. The ultimate eccumenical move.
It failed miserably. BUT - also in the 60's a priest named Francis McNutt asked if he could launch a healing ministry and was denied. So he left the church and founded one on his own. With it came deliverance ministry.
Deliverance is any liberation from evil that comes without use of the Rite of Exorcism.
It really caught on. Around that same time the Pentecostal movement was gaining strides. Along with it the Charismatic Renewal movement within the Catholic Church.
Their healing and deliverance ministries were getting bigger and bigger.
The whole thing snowballed. Leaving a majority of Catholicism behind until recently. We are slowly catching up.
Friend B: I need to explain a few things... With deliverance ministries being handled by the laity, you might get a few who blame mental illness for demons - but with true exorcism - which is handled by a qualified priest, there are always tests by qualified doctors to prove this is not mental illness before permission is granted for an exorcism.
You might want to read American Exorcism by a fellow named Cuneo. He's a nonbeliever. It's one of the most objective books I've ever read. It's GREAT!

The symptoms of possession, when aflicting a member of an Athiest household, for instance, would be taken as evidence of mental disturbance, and the victim committed instead of exorcised. Similarly, many religions have thier own explanations for such syptoms. The (most superstitious) Christians choose to believe they indicate possession.

Nah. What do you define as "Christian"? Non-catholic Christians? No Catholic "Christians"? Yes. I've noticed that in just about all the movies on this subject, the catholic church is directly involved. Coincidence? To be fair, though, I've heard of some of those "snake handling" hardcore, fundamentalist churches going stupid real quick with stories about demon possession, people rolling around on the ground and generally making asses out of themselves.

First you believe in demons, and that gives negative energies a way into you. If you take more responsibility than believing in something someone TOLD you, you don't get possessed.

Because christians have the keys to life. They can tell the world about there soul saving gospel.Because we can tell about there saviour JESUS.
A devil will have no problem in someone who aint saved and telling the world about JESUS.But for someone who is telling about JESUS.it will attack to less the destruction caused by them to it.The bible says John 10:10 it comes to steal, kill and destroy but JESUS came to give life.
So a christian would tell others about life.so devil will try anything to get them back.
Plus when we sin we open a door for devil to work into our lifes it puts us in bondage until we confess.
GOD loves u so much that he sent his son JESUS to die for u to reconcile u back.
John 3:16 says "For GOD so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoso ever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life".Ask JESUS to come into your heart and forgive ur sins and cleanse ur past with his blood.
With a simple prayer like above u can be saved.

You may be possessed, but you just don't know it. When a Christian becomes possessed, they recognize it.
