Because the sky, stars and "heavens" are much more impressive naturally, than what you don't see under dirt. Weather comes from above. Any human with a spiritual past (meaning ALL of us) have a anthropology of hoping for rain (crops), water for drinking, less brutal weather, etc. - and the Aztecs would kill for good weather, too. Magma comes from below, and that's hot -- see the connection? (Then again, you could always just go to church or read-up on the world's best-selling book and not have to ask the question in the first place.) For you to ask blankly, means you don't think things thru too extensively do you, on your own?

Just it is the some interpretation..
You said .. God is everywhere ..
At first for the kids .. they ask much .. so the reply must be convincing to them .. and they can accept .. later they will know that everywhere without seeing him and touching it sensually has a meaning ..
God is inside you .. and everywhere ..
And might be the reason ..
Up is a good thing meaning the superiority ..
Down is just a dirt ..
Best regards .. and have a good day ..

Just mumbo-jumbo convention.
The 'Rebellion in Heaven' tale involves the much-vaunted 'Falling to Earth' of Lucifer ( the light bringer ) and his cohorts. Thus 'down' has been attributed to an 'ungodly' direction, and 'up' therefore is, by interpolation I suppose, the 'Godly' direction.
It really is a lot of old cobblers because the 'Falling to Earth' bit is yet another misinterpretation of the literal arrival here of our genetic ancestors, about a quarter of a million years ago. That was not their first arrival either, there had been earlier events long, long before.
Anyway, we, and the 'God(s)' , arrived here in a downward direction, following a gravitational descent. Nothing too elaborate.

Because there is more to look at when you look up. Space is mysterious and unknown, where as we can feel dirt and know that it is a pain to deal with. So if God is all powerful and mysterious then he must be living in the one thing that we look at in a wonderous way. If the devil is bad and evil, then he must be below us, and be under the dirt which causes us to be unclean. That and the fact that volcanoes spew fire from under the ground.
Onelove - if you take the batteries out you will cease the vibrations.

"Up" is generally preferable to "down" for terrestrial beings such as ourselves. In a fight, you want to be on top. As children, we look up to our parents. Above us is the expansive vault of the empyrean; below us, the cold, hard ground, the bed of corpses. Etc. It's pretty easy to see how we humans developed the notion that "up" should be associated with "good things," and "down" with "bad."
I hope this answer is at least more substantive and interesting than those that simply quote Bible verse in which Christ ascends into heaven and descends into hell, etc.

I've asked this very same question using different words.
My question is::
Why do we keep saying that becoming one with God raises our vibration to a "higher" level, when truly the vibration of God (of peace, love, and harmony) is so still that it sometimes feels like there is no vibration?
Maybe we should try and still the vibrations within us, for I feel they are the root of division and stress. Just my two pence.

41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."
(John 12:41,42)
Notice - Jesus looked UP
"7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8This is why it says:
"When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men." 9(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)"
(Ephesians 4:7-10)
How do we know anything about the spirit realm?
By reading the Bible.

~~~look ,,,, Very simple if you know your Historical Evolution of The Mythology of Mankind.This is a reference to mankind's remnant of the Star Religions which were an evolution from the Nature Religions which preceded them. The hell "down" there is a remnant of the Nature Religion's Volcanic Gods.
That is a very good question. :-) The popular teaching is that "God" is actually omnipresent. He is not up or down or on the side... His presence, or concsiousness or atoms or whatever are everwhere according to theologians.
The Apostle's Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He **DESCENDED** into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He **ASCENDED** into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
