My cousin, who is in the army, said that because guys are out at war for so long, that some guys will actually rape other guys. He said that if you're a thin and have a kinda girlish face, then don't join the army because you will get raped, or atleast felt up alot. He also claimed he saw it happen to a rookie.
So how true is this?

Well, alot of people are asking if he saw a rape in progress why he didn't report it... I don't know, this is what he told me. He could be lying, but I doubt it, he's not the type to lie.

Guys get raped everywhere, in all the services and among civilians, it mostly goes unreported due to the fact that male rape victims are automatically assumed to be gays who "asked for it", just as female victims are routinely portrayed as sluts getting "what they deserved". Due to the homophobic attitudes of society in general and the military in general, most servicemen, not, you must understand, servicewomen, walk around in a complete state of denial. I spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy, I was on active duty for both Nam and Desert Storm, as well as during peacetime, I was a Bailiff at a Court Martial for a male/male sexual assault, and I worked for a while at a brig. Rapists look for excuses and justifications, they don't need a reason, most of them honestly believe that in the end the victim enjoyed it. As to not reporting it, being a "snitch" can get you killed, in the military just as anywhere else. When your life depends on the good will of your squad mates, you can't afford to make enemies.

Well I am guessing that if it happens to civilians it can happen to soldiers, though I am sure it happens very very infrequently considering the nature and make up of the army and its soldiers.
But being deployed doesnt mean that it happens to them more frequently. There ARE women who deploy too, so it is possible to handle business with them (although they arent supposed to). And then, there is the hand. It is so possible to "release" without forcing another into the act.
Your cousin wasnt telling the truth, or is misinformed. And yeah, I agree with the others, why didnt he report it if he saw it. I wouldnt like your cousin very much if he allowed something like that to happen.

An Air force officer was recently court-martial ed for Rape and sodomy against males. However it was stateside and he used Roofies to knock the dudes out. So it is poss able and does happen yet it is not a common occurrence and not in the manner that is described in your question. By the way your cousin is probably Joshing with you.

I've never heard this. My husband has been in the Army for 5 years and deployed for more than 2, and I'm pretty sure he'd have mentioned something like this. The only time I've heard of male soldiers having sex with male soldiers is when they're actually gay, and it's consensual.
There are women there too, you know. Every single base in Iraq has female servicemembers stationed on it as well. It's not like prison where they haven't seen a woman in 10 years. If they want to have sex, they can just convince one of the female servicemembers. That happens a lot.
I say your cousin is a liar.

No, but there is a couple of figures I did read. In the U.S. general population, 1 in 4 females will get raped before they are 18 and 1 in 10 males will get raped in their lifetime.

Your cousin was pulling your leg, and probably your other leg as well. What you cousin said was patently untrue. Remember, this is the Army, which is as homophobic as any warrior-culture can get (even as increasingly diluted as it is becoming). This isn't to say that male-on-male sexual assault doesn't happen, but it is exceedingly rare.
Assault on females, on the other hand, is a SERIOUS problem, and has been in all ranks and service branches.

Sexual predators are no more prevalent in the armed forces than they are in any other environment. And it has nothing to do with how thin and "kinda girlish" the victim looks. Unless you're gay and known to be free with your affections.

He's hanging around the wrong people. No guy will get banged in the military. It might happen in civilian world but not the military world......And another thing....You said he saw it happen......What kind of a guy would stand there and watch a guy do it to another guy....Scary!!
