you need to use conditional formatting.. to do this
1.go to format(on the toolbar that 'file' is on)
2.click on conditional formatting
3.enter information into the boxes, i.e 'cell value' is 'equal to' 'yes'
click on format click on the 3rd tab names 'patterns'
4.chooce a colour/pattern
5. click ok
to add another one, click on add, at the bottom of the small box you are working in, then repeat the process...

Select the cell(s) you wish to apply the rule to, then select Format on the toolbar, then select Conditional Formatting from the drop down menu. You can select the condition and what you want the cell to do when that condition is met (eg change colour if a certain value is exceeded). You can set up to 3 conditions and effects.
