This happened to my dog too when he was a puppy. We had to give him an operation, he's ok now though, it was something like osgoodslatus disease (sp?). Lots of labradors are common to leg problems, it is to do with the way they were selectively bred.

This could be a few things, firstly how much exercise does he get?A 4month old lab should be having no more then 20 mins a day twice a day, over strenuous exercise can result in bone damage as there still developing. While attending puppy classes with my dog,a man who had a 4month old choc lab told us of the same thing, that his dog was limping after exercise and after playing with other dogs...he had been taking the pup for 40min walks across feilds etc.Secondly did you see the pups parents hip scores? hip dysplasia is a common ailment in labs and all parents should have there hips scored. It could just be that your pup has sprained it or got a bit of grass stuck in the pad,but i would advice taking him back to the vets and maybe suggesting the things i've wrote above....if it doesn't seem to get any better after a few weeks and you have seen the vet a few times....demand an x ray!!!Good luck.

Yup, xrays are needed if the anti-inflammatories didn't work.
This is standard procedure for a limp - if the painkillers clear it up and it doesn't come back then whoo hooo, you got it sorted without ever having to know the cause. Anti-inflammatories should work fairly quickly tho - you should see an improvement within 24-48 hours, so if you haven't, waiting another week isn't going to make a difference.
Since A.I.s haven't worked, xrays are needed to determine the cause so the specific treatment can be given. It could be joint, muscle or bone problems, and it may need meds OR surgery to fix it, so go ahead and let the vet discover the cause.

Growing puppies are just like growing children, they over play and pull a muscle or run into things. Growing pains.
I have a 14 month old German Shepherd that hurts herself all the time. Her favorite toy is a plastic 2 gal. plastic bucket & she twists & turns & jumps & f-a-l-l-s. So she has something bothering her most of the time cause she just can't stop the puppy in her. I had someone suggest I have her put down cause she had hip dysplasia. Bull ! ! ! She had a pulled muscle or ligament. It was a know-it-all Vet student. My neice, of all people.
Puppies are their own worst enemies. They are very resilent though and as one boo boo goes away another will take it's place just like growing children do.

You probably need some different meds. It's common for large breed dogs to have periods of lameness while growing, but your vet should be able to give you something to alleviate the limping. (If he's limping, it hurts - or else he wouldn't limp.) Don't exercise your puppy too much until the issue is completely resolved. Try to limit his activities - sometimes tough to do with a 4 month old - and don't let him run around too much.

If he has pulled a muscle then it will take weeks if not months to fully heal itself, ring your vet and ask, in the meantime get some Glucosamine tablets for dogs from a health food shop and start giving him those as they will help him considerably, but speak with your vet first.

What did the vet say, when he did he go to the vet???
I would suggest speaking to your vets about what they think. Nobody can tell you what to do on a forum cos they can't tell what the vet felt when he/she examined him, what anti-inflammatories. If your vet suggested an xray then take him for an xray. It could be a strain or it could be a growth condition such as hip dyplasis, OCD etc.
Please phone your vet they will put your mind at rest...
