Here's the story; this is a prophsied future event:

1And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea.
And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 4Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"
5The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. 6He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

9He who has an ear, let him hear.
10If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity he will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword,
with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.
11Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon. 12He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men. 14Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
18This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

In order to answer your question and according to the biblical relation... 666 is supposed to be the mark or number of a person who will be a leader in the world. many people will respect this person and the person will help a lot of people in the world and be seen as a righteous man. But, after threats are gone this person will begin to unify people and use lies, trickery and fear to gain people's trust. The 666 is significant beauce the bible says that each person will have to accept a mark (either on the wrist or forhead) in order to simply funcition in everyday society. Those that refuse the mark will be killed.
Apparently 777 is God's number. That is a story I've heard.

Short answer:

1. the number 6 represents mankind
2. the number is repeated 3 times as to represent the tri-unity of man
3. since the person that we have all come to know as the "anti-Christ" will be a man that will rule over men people believe that during the tribulation period, that is the mark that must be taken in the hand or forehead for loyalty and later buying and selling.

I personally don't think that it will be that number. Using the technology that is available now, it will probably be a chip with a bar-code.

My advice: don't miss the rapture!!!!!!

666 is below 777, the which is perfection.
It is not in the Bible.

7 is the number for perfection, 777 is the number for God, as there are three persons in God.

6 is one less than 7. It is less than perfect. 666 is when the antichrist tries to make himself appear to be God, but fails. No matter how hard he tries, he will never be like God. He will always end up short.

666 also in hebraic numerology equates to Nero. This suggests that the anti-christ will be a world leader.

The 666 mark will be an identifier the Antichrist will use to figure out who's loyal to his way of doing things. Without accepting it, one cannot buy, sell, have a job, and etc. therefore surrendering control of everything about themselves in a public vein to the Antichrist. The number 6 in Bible numerology stands for man and incompletion. Three "sixes" in one man is a representation of the imitation of the Holy Trinity in the personage of Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet. The Antichrist will be working as Satan's proxy, and this threefold system of socio-religious control will be what Satan uses to get what he's craved fro centuries, the worship of the Earth's people. By offering them a "Satanic counterfeit" clothed in "religion", he will be able to deceive many!

The Amplified Bible puts it, "a human number." This expression could not refer to an individual human, for Satan—not any man—has authority over the beast. (Luke 4:5, 6; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 13:2, 18) Rather, the beast's having "a human number," or mark, suggests that it is a human entity, not spirit or demon, and that it therefore manifests certain human traits. What might they be? The Bible answers, saying: "All [humans] have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) The beast's having "a human number," therefore, indicates that governments reflect the fallen human condition, the mark of sin and imperfection.

The mark of the beast, is for those who set requirements for fellowship with other Christians, in any manner. When you say, "This person is not good enough to be called Christian." then you are 'The Anti-Christ'. It doesn't matter if your talking about the devil incarnate. The name Christian, is not for you to give.

The book of Revelation has nothing to do with world events, past, present or future. It is about your own personal journey to salvation.

The marks you speak of are in the head, and the hand. Just as you life can be seen as the connection between your thoughts, and your deeds. Remember, faith without works is dead.

Take all that you have read about the numerology, and apply it privately to your personal life. Many people have done marvelous work decifering this mystery, and many of them may be correct in a numeralogical sense. They only need to apply that work to themselves, and let God judge the world.

666 is the number that is supposedly the number of "the Beast" in the book of Revelation. The word "antichrist" does not appear ANYWHERE in the book of Revelation and it is presumptuous to claim that it refers to someone mentioned in that book.
