just curious what others thought. most docs say at one they can. but our infant formula is on the list for a potential recall and i was thinking of just going ahead and switching him. everyone in the family eats 100% organic all the time, as does he except for his formula. so the milk he would be getting is ultra-pasteurized vitamin D whole organic milk, made without growth hormones, anti-biotics, and to only grain-fed cattle. at this time, he eats lots of organic dairy, including yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese.. and has had no problems so far. thanks in advance!

obviously i would consult my pediatrician before making any changes. i was just wondering what other moms thought for some "research" before i went in there.

Both of my kids switched at 11 months and they lived! Their tummies should be ready for it, especially since he is already having dairy products. Go for it, you will save loads of money getting off of the formula!

Cow's milk is not recommended as the *sole* source of nutrition for an infant until after 12 months. (Don't know why so many things arbitrarily change on that particular date, but...:shrugs: ) This is because it doesn't contain the essential nutrients in the correct proportions-- formula has been drastically altered to have the right ratios of proteins, fats, sugars, salt, minerals, etc.

HOWEVER, it is my experience and opinion that, if your particular baby is doing well on other dairy products, seems to handle it well (digestively), and is eating a variety of other foods to the point that the milk is basically given at mealtimes and bed/naptimes, he is probably going to do just as well on regular milk at 11 months as he will another month from now.

Family history of allergies should also be well considered-- he may not show signs of dairy allergy now, but it can develop over time with a cumulative effect, so that should definitely be kept in mind.

Be sure to talk with your baby's doctor; lots of them understand that every baby and every baby's diet is different, and 12 months is not the be-all-end-all Magic Time for everything to happen with babies.

Best wishes, and enjoy your little boy!

My daughter was one year old when she was drinking cows milk. One month early will not hurt him especially if he is already eating dairy products with no problem. He needs whole milk until he is two then you can switch to reduced fat milk. The fat in the whole milk is necessary for brain function at this age. As long as his diet is good it will not make a difference in the vitamins and minerals that formula has in it. Organic foods are great! Keep it up, you should be fine.

Usually it's recommended to wait until 12 months to wean from formula to cow's milk. Since he doesn't appear to have any sensitivities to dairy, it's not likely that he'll have problems digesting cow's milk. The bigger concern is to be sure he is getting all of the nutrients that he needs; formula is synthesized to be close to human breastmilk and cow's milk doesn't have everything that formula has. If he's getting a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, veggies, etc. then you'll probably be just fine. If you aren't sure whether he'd be getting adequate nutrition, do go ahead and double check with his pediatrician.

I'd start introducing cow's milk in the next couple weeks in small amounts but wait until he's 12 months before you wean him off the formula and give him milk entirely

If he's already eating other dairy products, then cow's milk won't hurt him. But you should check with your doctor about making sure he's getting all the vitamins, etc., that are in fortified formula and NOT in regular milk.

I started my son on cow's milk at 12 months and he started to get colds more often. If your son has asthma or anything that will make him more susceptible to sickness, I would suggest sticking with formula. Otherwise, go ahead and switch him. It saves a lot of money!

Not that you can or can not. I gave my son 'cow milk' earlier than 1 and my doctor said that it was perfectly fine as long as I was giving him more formula than the actual milk. After 11 months I completely took him off the formula & started giving him actual milk. So, I'm sure it's different on all children.

Yes but do it slowly over a week or two. Start with one fourth of milk the rest formula, then one half rest formula until he is used to the milk.

If he has just turned 11 months I would say no. If he will be one next week then I would say ok.
You could give him a different formula since he was on the recall list
