Because it's gross. It makes you have to spit which there is no way to do that in front of someone without being rude. And, it will cause mouth cancer which is an excrutiatingly painful condition.

My father-in-law chews tobacco. I personally think it's a discusting habit. Leaving bottles and cans sitting all over the place, with brown spit and pieces of tobacco floating in it. Makes me want to gag. Everyone makes a big deal about it because of 2 things... bottles of spit that are usually in plain view of others, and people don't want to see that. It's gross. And it's not proper manners to spit. No matter what the reason is for. Even if you or others don't chew tobacco, nobody wants to see someone else doing it. Certainly not step in it on the sidewalks, parking lots, streets, etc. either.
