There are cases that illustrate how things play out in general when federal personages are victims of crime:

In October, 2003 Kathleen Gregg, the wife of New Hampshire's senator was briefly kidnapped during the course of an "ordinary" home invasion robbery. The perpatrators were likely unaware they had kidnapped a senator's wife. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0310/08/ltm.05.html

In another incident a supreme court justice (I think it was Souter) was mugged not too long ago while jogging near his DC area home. Try a google search on that.

Local law enforcement usually heads in the investigation. But it is plausible to imagine federal agencies like the FBI and Secret Service pouring in supporting resources in a Senator's homicide. A federal agency would be the lead investigator under certain circumstances--e.g. the murder happened (Or the body is found) on an indian reservation, on a military installation or vessel,

Like investigating any other murders - it should be so as senators are basically human but maybe with a bit of added dramatization as a cover for his/her political blunders!
