Some atrocities were committed in both but in both cases Christians were responding to Islamic assaults on Europe. The Reconquista or Inquisition was the only way to get back Spain from the Muslims. The Crusades were called by Pope Pious as a direct result of the Byzantine Empire begging for help because they were being destroyed by Muslims. The Byzantine Empire was a Christian Empire that once included North Africa, The Middle East and Turkey. All of these places had somehow become Muslim in the years before the Crusades and remain so to this day.

Where is the outrage at the initial jihad that extended the Islamic Empire from India to Spain in less than 100 years? Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire while being fed to lions and crucified not through force but we are compared to the Islamic religion who didn't even try to peacefully convert people.

Isn't this ironic that the greates "atrocities" in Christian history are in response to Islamic imperialism?

SOrry Terry but you're ignorant on this. Ferdinand and Isabella started the Inquisition in 1478 to help get the Moors out of Spain and they fully succeeded in 1492. THe Moors were 100% Muslim. Look it up holmes.

Perhaps two wrongs don't make a right... There is no excuse whatsoever for those atrocities in spite of any provocation!

Ironic? Not really. And there was more than one Inquisition lol What took off after they got back Spain had nothing to do with Muslims.

Um, Christianity did not take off like that till after the Roman Empire fell and the Roman Catholic Church took over. And yes, there were many times it was done by force. Pagan shrines which had stood for hundreds of years were completely destroyed to build churches. Libraries were destroyed (there was more libraries than just the one at Alexandria- the one there was the biggest).

What's ironic is that, though this is true... that the crusades and Spanish Inquisition was started over Muslims.... you leave out the rest of it in an attempt to make it appear that Christianity had nothing to do with all of the killings in Europe during what is now called the Witch Craze, when the churches and "secular" courts have documents backing this up. It doesn't take away the fact that all of those people were killed. The atrocity is that so many people are trying to avoid admitting that part of it while they still use the propaganda used back then to make Pagans/Wiccans out to be Devil worshippers.

You make lots of sense.
Muslims were indeed the aggressors during the wars of the Middle ages; However, today Historians have looked back at those conflicts and see it as the making of the modern world. The crusades had it highs and lows but it was a period of heroic chivalry, adventure and esteem feats of bravery.

One thing though; ..the inquisition was uncalled for and had nothing to do with getting back Spain from the Muslims.

Atually, both were conducted by Catholics They may have started out as a response to Islamic threats but during the Crusades, there were a fair share of Protestants who were tortued and/or killed, and in the Inquisition, American Indians were attacked-by the Spanish.
Also, no matter how bloody or terrible Islamic led attacks were, it doesn't lessen the impact of what those horrible crimes against humans were, under the pretense of a 'loving' God.

you are not completely wrong but you should know that the Inquisition was just a way to keep people uneducated and strongly fixated on what the church and the kings wanted.
people were tortured for no other reason but to satisfy priests beliefs and sense of power.
Christianity has nothing to do with either.

both religions have committed huge crimes against humanity but you should not forget that all religions have stupid followers or ambitious ones and when stupid and ambitious people get the power that is what happens.

The Byzantine Empire initiated the war with Muslims when the Muslim state was weak, and they paid for their treachery. Muslim jihad was in response to Christian imperialism.

"Christians were responding to Islamic assaults "

What twisted history book did you read (or probably just page through)???

The malleus maleficarum was not written for battle with Muslims, it was written to terrorize innocent people, of their own continent, by means of torture, fear, and lies.

By the popes own order, Inquisitors roamed the land looking for anyone who could be considered ungodly, and to stamp out ANY other religion such as Cathari. This was not some noble war, this was pure power grab. This was making sure any and all monies went to the pope, no one else. This was CENTURIES of slaughtering their own people in the name of god. All approved by the pope.

Do more research before you say such silly things!!

Because the Vatican did it in the name of Christ falsely, and over a twenty year period tortured and killed over 68 million people. Not through force? It was the Roman Emperor Nero who threw the Christians to the lions in the Circus Maximus and who burned Christians alive as Roman Candles in his garden parties!!!!! The Vatican and the Roman Catholic church, under the guise of "Christianity", has a hell of alot of blood on its hands.

Jesus didn't preach religion folks, get your facts straight.

P.S. Hey Mel, do you really think those power hungry leaders were doing this in the name of God or has the thought that they were greedy, self serving, and ambitious escaped you? The way they behaved has nothing at all to do with Jesus' teachings.
