awareness of oneself and your surroundings...awareness of future possibilities and inevitability's.....the ability to ponder....and it comes from God

Edit: I just knew I would get thumbs down for answering this question...even though all I did was exactly what the asker wanted...I gave my opinion and belief.....go figure...

electrical impulses in the brain and our ability to reason. An ability mind you that is also shared among other primates as well as dolphins (to a degree less than us, but nonetheless they exhibit it).

Animals think, and according to many religions they have no souls. Animals also have "learned" behaviors as well as instinct so this is not the reason behind thier actions all the time.

Thus the "consiousness" idea doesn't prove anything except an abstract philisophical argument that attempts to define life in a limited fasion that doesn't take into account plantlife that also is alive but doesn't have the ability to think (except callista flockhart who is somehow the first swiffer that was the recipient of a brain transplant).

Consiousness is simply put the ability to think, it is our brain functions that give us this ability. consiousness doesn't necessarily need to come from a brain or even a carbon based life form, eventually AI will catch up and we will have life based on silicon as well as carbon. right now it is the electrical impulses in the brain that do allow us to think and reason.

A consciousness is me knowing the difference between right and wrong. It came from the valves and morals my parents taught me and the laws in places. Weather I agree with some of those or not.

Thoughts are electrochemical processes in our brain. Consciousness is a state of self-awareness that was developed gradually throughout evolution. Experiments seem to show that certain animals are also capable of self-awareness, to a degree.

Must come from one of the clusters of cells in our brain that is not responsible for all the other aspects humans are capable of. Energy seems to play a role no one quite understands.

Whatever consciousness is, it emanates from the material brain.

As to what it is, that's an age-old question that has no definite answer.
