Parents say weeks and months in describing a child's age before the child is one, but why does it stop at 2. Couldn't it stop a 1-years old.

Because there is a huge difference between a child that is 12 months and a child that is 20 months. both are technically 1 year old but are actually very different in maturation.

Because of the developmental milestones during the first 2 year. A 15month old is a lot different from a 12 month old etc etc. When a child turns 2 their development slows down, the major developmental milestone being learning to talk.

Because there is such a wide difference in what the child can do. If you say "my child is 1 year old", if they are 13 months old they may not be able to even walk yet, but if they are 23 months old they will be talking and self-feeding. After the age of 2, children don't change as much.

Because there are still a lot of developmental milestones between age 1 and 2. Not too many babies can walk and talk by age one, so people like to talk about whether their child could speak at age x months, etc.

Because of child development milestones expected to be reached at certain months of age up to age 2 years, the number of months old are what are used in saying one's child's age.

Mainly it is due to milestones. So many things are "supposed" to happen in the first 2 years. It is basically for the doctor use that has carried over into society because it just seems easier.
