Why not with toe jam?

OK, seriously, why is it served with chips? Why not chicken or mutton chops?

Because we usually don't eat 2 meats in one sitting and you already had the fryer out to fry the fish so it is logical to slice up some potatoes and fry them up also save the toe jam for your toast

Because you already have the frying oil hot so it makes sense to throw in some french fries (chips). You wouldn't add chicken or mutton chops because you already have your meat with the fish.

I do not believe that fish is usually served with chips. Battered deep fried fish is best with chips. I usually serve rice with pan fried, grilled or broiled fish. Why would you want to serve another main course, chicken or chops, with fish?

Fried fish in batter served with fried potatoes is simply traditional - it came to the UK from eastern Europe in the 18th or 19th century.

However you don't have to serve it with chips - I personally think there is nothing nicer than grilled fish with chillis and lemon, served with crusty bread and salad.
