I'm interested in taking self defense classes but not to lose weight I actually want to learn an art and very well.I want to really know to defend myself so are there any suggestions to something good for serious people like me?Seems like everything I find is slow paced for people wanting to lose weight or just take it just cuz

you are going to have to physically check out the places that teach MA in your area. All MA's are good for self defense however the student can only be as good as the instruction that is given.

Places to avoid:

any place that advertises to get your Black belt in X amount of time for X amount of dollars. they are belt factories and the training is usually substandard at best

places that mix young children in adults in the same classes.

* check the credentials of the Instructor. who did they train under, etc. I have meet plenty of instructors over the years that can't fight/spare their way out of a wet paper bag.
