can I only hook up my digital cable to the hdmi and not a digital dvd? and if thats the case what should I hook up the dvd to?

Well check to see if your cable box or dvd player has hdmi input and output. If that's the case you can caddy them together.

As you can see there are many different ways to get around your problem. If you want everything that has an HDMI connection to be able to be hooked up via HDMI then you will need to get some sort of equipment that can switch HDMI. That can be a new A/V receiver with HDMI switching capabilities or with a stand alone HDMI switcher. However, since component video supports HD, you may want to consider using it as a cheaper alternative.

You could use component to hook up the DVD or component on your cable and HDMI for the DVD... OR you could get an AV receiver and plug it up to the TV using HDMI and plug the DVD and cable to the AV receiver using HDMI!
