I've wondered this too. Some of my customers would scarf down a 16 oz. prime rib, baked potato with extra butter and sour cream, tons of dressing and cheese on their salad, rolls with extra butter...and order a Black Velvet and DIET Coke.
I asked once, and the customer (a regular and good friend) said it was just because he liked Diet Coke. To each their own.

Some people just like the taste (don't know why it's carbonated colored water) and others feel that if they drink a diet drink with a fatty meal that it will balance out the meal and make it healthier. They also could just be used to drinking diet soda and only drink it (could have drank it while on a diet or with someone who was and just became accustomed to the taste). And the fourth reason is because they may not be able to have sugar, but want to drink a soda with their meal. For example my grandfather was diabetic, but would like to occasionally spoil himself and go out and get fast food with my grandmother and he would drink a diet coke so that he didn't overdue his sugar intake, and my grandmother just became used to drinking diet soda, so now that's all she will drink.

I always have a diet coke if I have been out drinking and then eaten a takeaway. I dont get a hangover that way and dont have to get up in the night for a drink of water!

Because they are under the delusion that the 'diet' coke will make up for the fatty meal!

I would have done this a couple of months ago, but I've not had a take-away since before my diet started. But I would have diet coke, because ordinary coke is just too sweet for me, i don't take sugar in coffee and don't have any drinks with sugar in because they are too sickly sweet, so thats why i drink diet coke, or any diet drinks.

Some people, like myself, prefer the taste of diet vs it's full calorie brother. To me, drinking a regular coke is like drinking pure maple syrup.
Once you acquire the taste for diet drinks that becomes the preference regardless of what it accompanies.

I personally like diet sodas better so why add the extra calories drinking something I dont like as much. Also, I had a friend who was diabetic and could eat a lot of foods, she just couldnt eat sugars and would get diet because of that.

Sometimes people drink diet pop for other reasons than "dieting". Sugar being very bad for your teeth, diabetes, or simply the taste. I know I personally do not like regular pop because it is too sweet, but I am not on a diet.

All through high school I ate a Twix candy bar, and diet coke for lunch. Healthy? NO WAY! But I joked that the diet coke balanced out the candy bar.

Well, it could be one of three things:
1. They like the taste of Diet Coke
2. They're being silly, watching for one thing and not the other
3. They're diabetic and doing something off diet and don't want to make it any worse by ingesting the sugary soda
