I am 19 years old, 4'11(height) and I am 70lbs overweight!!

I have tried various types of diets. So many of them are not right for me (I cant cut out too many carbs because I really dislike meats and cheese)...

I have decided that my main goal is to live an overall healthier life style...exercising and eating healthy foods (lots of fruits and veggies, better portion sizes)...

One thing that I'd like to try is cutting out fats (rather than cutting down calories)... A friend of mine is on a very strict diet and only allows herself 15 grams of fat per day. She eats a lot (vegetables fruits, other non fat items)... but is this healthy for your body?

How many grams of fat should I be consuimg per day?

You need essential fats just like you need water so you have to be careful with any diet that attempts to completely reduce one of the three items we need. Fats, Protien and Carbs. You can have a balanced diet while still reducing the amount of calories that you intake. There are good carbs and bad carbs, good fats and bad fats and the same with protein...some is better than others. I would suggest that you look at your day, eliminate all sugars, saturated fats and white carbs first. Then move to trying to get to 5-6 small balanced meals per day. Remember 70 pounds is 245,000 calories so anywhere that you can reduce the calories from foods that do not help you will work wonders. Multiply your weight times 10 then reduce that by 200-300 calories per day and divide by 6.....that would be a rough estimate of calories per meal. Last but not least.......WORK harder at the gym and stay hydrated....THIS IS FOR YOUR HAPPINESS so you have to put a little more into it. Hope this helps

I would say 20-25 grams per day, You can work your way down to that though.

Remember that recommendations are not the same for everyone. People are different, depending on how fit or overweight they are. People who exercise and are fit can afford more calories and more dietary fat in their diets.

If you are overweight, you need to reduce the amount of total calories and fat grams in your diet.

For lifetime change -- make small steps one day at a time. Cut back your calories and fat grams by only 10 percent every couple of weeks until you reach your goal. Couple this with exercise and you're on your way!

Good Luck

If you can't cut carbs way down and don't exersise you can't lose weight. You've got to either cut your carbs down a lot or burn them by working out or doing sports (preferably both). Otherwise it won't work. Eating more meat and less starchy stuff is the best dietary advice you'll get. You can't cut your fat intake down too much because your body needs it for energy. If you eat fat instead of carbs for energy, your body will actually lose its own fat. You see, fat is harder for your body to break down into energy than carbs. Your body has to burn more stored energy to break down the fat in meat and cheese than it does to break down carbs. When you eat starchy stuff, your body easily breaks it down into sugars. It uses what little it has to of those sugars and stores the rest of it as fat on your body. Ever wonder why people who drink a lot of soda or beer or eat a lot of pasta gain weight? Thats why. If nothing else, at least cut out the alchohol and soda pop (even "diet" soda since the sugar substitutes in them are very bad for you).

for women no less than 20% of the daily calories should be derived from fats. any less than that and testosterone production will drop by around 30% which means a decrease in muscle mass and a decrease in the metabolic rate
