PVC pipe is correct you will want to use something around 1.5 inch diameter or bigger. (just big enough that the handle of your rod fits snugly with little trouble inserting into pipe) If you are planning to use for bank fishing I recommend beveling one end so it will be very easy to insert into the ground.

I use PVC pipe.I get a 10 foot pipe for 8 or 9 dollars at the home depot(or simular type store) and can make bout 6 out of it.I just cut the pipe at an angle to stick into the ground.I have not had any problems with them.

Use a foot to foot and half long section of PVC 2" pipe and get eome rebar the length you need(mine are 40" long) now place the rebar 8" to 10" up on the PVC "holder" using hose clamps 1 at the base and one at the top edge of the rebar. Now I use a dremel tool and cut a slot(3" to 4")from the top down in the PVC for my reel arm to slide down through!
Great for spinning or casting reels if you use casting reels the rebar faces the water and just turn around to use with spinning reels. At the top part of the rebar on mine I had a "L" piece out so if I need to hammer them down I can.

What me and my dad would do is take a round piece of metal about a quarter of an inch thick and two feet long. We would take one end and bend it down and then back up again to form a loop our poles would fit in. There real easy to make, and real easy to put in the ground.

I have never had a problem just cutting a stick into a Y and just proping my rod about half way into the center. all you need is a hachet, an axe or a good pocket knife (every fisherman should have one of those in their pocket anyway)
