Epilepsy is caused by scar tissue in any of various parts of the brain which cause the neurons inside to fire inappropriately. They will begin firing near the scar tissue, and it will spread from one hemisphere of the brain to the other (I've actually started seeing the seizure start in my left eye before both hemispheres were affected and I lost consciousness). Scar tissue can be present for a number of reasons, from hereditary factors, brain injury or disease, or just random chance--everyone has scar tissue in their brains somewhere, and we epileptics just got lucky as to where ours was situated, I guess.

Epilepsy is a disease of the brain, but since the brain sends out motor control signals (activates muscular activity), it can involve seizures through all or any part of the body.
See a neurologist--this can be controlled and even cured!
