its true if you go to a beauty college you get your hair done dirt cheap. Usually, you only pay for the product ex. hair color or bleach. in beauty school there are 4 levels, at least here in NY. students are only allowed to work on a persons head once they reach level three. If i were you, I would get my hair done there, layers are easy and highlights are a sinch, plus the teachers are always there checking the clients hair making sure the student is doing it correctly. They won't let you leave unless you are 100% happy with the service, don't worry. I have had some of the cutest cuts and colors from a beauty school student.

Yeah beauty schools are cheaper than professional prices, because they are learning and do not have their cosmetology license yet. Typically it is around half the price of salon prices. My sister is in cosmetology right now and they actually do a really good job. She gave me a perm, highlighted my mom's hair and also cut my mom's hair. Along with my sister I have recently gone to the Empire Beauty School down the road from my college with my room mate, they're a little more expensive than my sister's school, but no where near as expensive as salons. And the teacher's (who are licensed cosmetologists) are right there to help the student's and make sure that they do everything right. Hair cuts are about $5 and I believe highlights are $20-30... (but it also depends on where you live and the beauty school)
But they do a really good job, so I would give them a chance, plus you save a lot of money.

Oh, you can get that done cheap at a beauty school...but just remember that they are still LEARNING...sometimes it is not a bad idea, and usually they have an instructor looking over their shoulder. You know how your hair is supposed to be done, just make sure you are paying attention...very closely to what they are doing, if you see them doing something wrong, just ask them to have their instructor come over and watch. Usually it isn't a problem. Honestly, I would have my hair trimed and colored there, but not layered. After you see how they trimm and color your hair, and you like that girl, then maybe you could have your hair layered by her. (kind of a building up trust kind of issue).
About the price thing, it is a lot cheaper! and if you can find someone that does a good job and pays attention to detail, then you just found yourself a gold mine...until they graduate!

I remember years ago i got my hair cut at a beauty school. It looked SO good because the instructor sat there and explained what to do and how to do it to her (the place was mostly black and i doubt they had too many white customers).
I only ended up paying maybe 5-10 dollars. Look it up online what schools are near you that do that kind of thing. Call and ask about pricing.
I wouldn't go in there and demand a crazy cut that would be too far advance, and like any salon or hair cuttery, you should probably bring pictures...because they are still learning!

I think it's a good idea if you are willing to take the chance that these are 'trainees'. I'm sure the people in charge will only let the ones who have reached a certain level work on customer's hair but still they are not fully trained so there is lots of chance for mistakes. But that is also true when you go to any service person for work to be done.
Did you know that you can get discounts if you go to a dental school - amazing!

Pay more for a good cut and coloring.... you do not want inexperienced people using you as a guinea pig. I think it is okay for guys to go to barber colleges (because it is harder to screw up a short cut) but I would not let them experiment on me! My male, mostly bald on top boss went to one and they left two little "tails" of longer hair on either side in the back. He had to turn around and pay for another cut from someone who knew what they were doing.
Coloring is also a risk, because improper processing can severely damage your hair even to the point of it falling out. More common is hair turning strange colors, like pink, orange, etc because the chemicals were not the right. No way. Save up and do it right.

Make sure that the Hair design school you go to is accredited. I went to Paul Mitchell of Hair for my schooling and we were excellent at color and cuts when we were put on the floor. The school that teaches the students for two months and then puts them onto the floor is the obvious better choice. It is alot cheaper, you'll prob spend 10-15 dollars for a cut and 20-40 for highlights, that is a guesstimate though.

You get what you pay for...
However, it depends on what kind of person you are. If you could handle a bad hair cut and color for awhile it's an okay gamble. But, if you're like me, a bad cut and color would make me cry.
Around where I live beauty school services are about half "salon" price. So, depending on the length and thickness off your hair you're probably be paying $20 for the cut and $60+ for the color. Go to smartpages.com and look up "beauty school". Give them a call and find out what their rates are.
Remember, you get what you pay for....

i payed $96 to highlight my hair and layer it. usually if you get something like a perm or a full highlight (not the illusion highlight, which is just the top layers of your hair) then a free hair style gets thrown in the deal. just call around and price.

My mother does this. She usually gives them $10, but, I think you can pay whatever. I would try to give $10 if it were myself. Remember they in the same situation you are, working/college men/women.
Another thing mom does is get her feet worked on. I not sure where, but, it like a Podiatry School and they clean her feet and toenails and trim them.
