There was this "Age of Enlightenment" during the time of Thomas Jefferson, where skepticism of the Bible and things contained therein were really doubted. They didn't believe there were Assyrians,Hittites or a city called Nineveh. Also the city of Troy was dismissed as false.
Then Heinrich Schliemann a German archaeologist uncovered Troy (called Troas in the Bible [book of Acts]).The Behistan rock was found. It had carved on it the names of many of the Assyrian Kings mentioned in the Bible, including Sennacherib. He also found the "Mythical city" of Nineveh.Since then they have found Jericho and others. They found the tomb of Caiaphas ,the Jewish high priest who tried Jesus.Paving stone written "House of David " and Solomon.
So,yeah, every time they turn over dirt they find evidence.

Im should think that quite a few do, especially after finding the Dead Sea Scrolls, which answered a lot of questins about the bible and jesus. A gospel written by Mary Magdalene was found although it never appeared in the bible, but this is explained because the bible could only be written by men. Nothing from any woman has been included in the Bible. There were also letters found refering to Pontious pilate about some unrest with the Jews.

There are plenty of people who call themselves archaeologist who do! I was talking to a Christadelphian who reckoned archaeology proved the bible - his logic was sort of 'The bible mentions the city of Siddon. This has been excavated, so everything in the bible must be true'! A bit like saying that the Harry Potter books mention London, and there is a city called London, so.....!

But really you have to qualify the term 'believe' - it is almost impossible to retain a literal belief in the bible when you know that many of the things it described just didn't happen, yet it is possible for some people to still maintain a belief, not in it's literal truth, but in it's value as a spiritual guide. (Can't see it myself, but there you go!)
