I have a problem with my Vista. My laptop is froze in the 'logging off' screen and will not shut down. I could not press the on/off button because it just puts it to sleep and when it comes back on its back to the 'logging off' screen. I just wait until the battery dies but then again after i plugged to power cord, its back to BS logging off screen.

Does anybody know how to restart the system? Any keyboard shortcut to shutdown??

Thhhx.

Hi Bry D,

Try holding down the power button for a while and that may work. Otherwise, try taking the battery out of your laptop and running it from the mains only. Removing the battery should definitely cause it to shut down because it has no power.

When you get power back, I advise that you change your power button settings so that any time you press the "off" button it shuts down, and doesn't sleep.

To do this:
Right click on the desktop -> Personalization -> Screen Saver -> Change power settings (in blue) -> Choose what the power buttons do (far left) -> "When i press the power button" choose "SHUT DOWN".

I am also wondering, could the laptop be in hibernation mode. In which case, it is not affected by powering down and just comes back where it left off. It seems quite unlikely, but if this is what is happening, I would disconnect the hard drive power, then plug it back in. I know that is a slightly dodgy option as you don't really want to be opening up your laptop and messing around in there!

Either way, all is not lost. A good computer shop should be able to fix the problem for you, and it's easy to take the hard drive out and connect it to an adapter to recover your data.

Hope it works for you!

Hold the on/off button down for a full five seconds, which will actually force the PC to shut down "ungracefully." This should get you where you want to be for a re-boot.

Good luck.

Perform a hard restart by pulling the battery and unplugging it from the wall. This will do the trick.
