In the context of treating the Bible as human words of their time, the extraordinarily male-oriented bias in it is unsurprising. I mean not only the shoddy treatment towards women, but the whole thing is essentially addressed directly to men. (Don't try and tell me it's "mankind" unless you want to try explaining why it says things like "ye shall find ye a wife.")
So, if this really were what God said, wouldn't it be addressed to all people - or was the feminist movement purely a result of "free will" and not predetermined?
Plenty of rope there, plenty of petty points to pick me up on, knock yourselves out.

Interesting and amusing point as usual smarttobees. 'Misogynist' was used mainly to drag people in to the question, I freely admit to that.
But I don't think you really believe your argument, do you? If men needed reigning in, wouldn't the much more simple and practical way be to put women in charge? Or is that just using logic and pragmatism to try and know the unknowable?

42 - what seed?
Anyway, surely if God said to treat women fairly as one of the comandments then that would have meant they were, wouldn't it?

You make a very good point. There was an op-ed piece in the newspaper not too long ago discussing the conundrum (I followed the big word truck to work today) of rampant chauvinism in Christianity versus the fact that church attendance is more popular with women than men. The author argued that modern Christian teachings such as God loves you just the way you are, God created you and God does not make mistakes, and there is nothing you can do or say or think to make God stop loving you are more popular with women (and gay men by the way) than with straight men. Straight men are more moved by sermons saying that Jesus destroyed death and that God will smite evil with the flaming sword of Archangel Michael.
My wife and I are Roman Catholic. Sometimes we attend our local church, sometimes we take my in-laws to the church where my wife grew up. While I do not have any scientific data, my informal observation shows that there are certainly more women at church than men. This is more pronounced at the parish were my wife and I live.

Of course there was that prostitute Jesus was kind to, on God's behalf, so he aint all bad. As you say, the Bible wasn't actually written by God, was it ? It was written by men, with their interpretation, based on their experiences and the mores of that time. The best way I have had it explained to me is that something as powerful and omnipotent and almighty as the er.. Almighty, with only the incredibly inferior and, by comparison, microscopic human mind to communicate through, would have had great difficulty in getting His(no gender bias intended) message across. Trying to funnel the knowledge of the entire cosmos through a tiny aperture, some of the deeper meaning is bound to be lost. On a Godly scale, he was talking to babbling illiterates, trying to get a complex message across to simple people. Introducing womens lib at that time ? Not such a smart move. Might get in the way of the big picture. Plant the seed, let it build for a couple of thousand years or so(not much time, relatively, is it ?). And it did happen. Part of His cosmic plan ? Maybe.

another question as i see it would be why is God always refered to as "He"? people on earth have not seen God and if one believes that one sees God only after one goes to heaven, that would be after one is dead.so how can anyone be so sure that God must be a "He"?
this is because all this faith was initiated by a male dominant society.it would have been SCANDALOUS to say the least to view a "She" as almighty and to believe that "She" created the world!!
but actually, can't a "She" be equally loving and compassionate?
if animals could speak they might say why not God be a Lion? after all may be God created Adam and Eve and gave them superiority over other beings because he knew that humans would be too arrogant to accept anything less.
ohh there are so many possibilities...but that is when believers bring in faith :)
but then again, faith is very subjective.there are people in this world who have faith that rocks and trees have souls of their own but would Christians accept this fact without EVIDENCE merely because those people say "u must have faith"?
nope,they'd laugh :P

Sexism is the reason why I refuse to follow any of the Abrahamic religions.
If they think I'm such a second-rate citizen, then they can just do without my money in the collection plate.

Your allegation at best sums up to 'The Bible is incomplete'. Why use strong words like 'misogynist' for God for this?
May be God felt the women can take care of themselves if men were reigned in and it is only we mere men who required directions.

How do you explain Jesus' treatment of women? He was, only, well, 2000 years ahead of his time...

That seems to be part of his appeal to Christians. Why the women put up with it--even embrace it--I'll never know.

And rape victims were to be married to their attackers.
Either god is totally clueless about rape or he viewed women as chattal.
