I am doing a civil war project on cryptography. I want my project to be valid so I need to know what kinds of code were actually used during the war. I also wondered if their was a good site about the codes. Please help if you can, thanks.

Cypher wheels...I think there is somebody who makes them for reenactors. They used all manners of codes. Check out reenactor sites as they know a lot .

Didn't you see the movies about how American Natives were used because they spoke an un-known to the enemy language and the one about the enigma encoding machine
