Yes, for a short while and a lot of my friends still do. The successful and more well known squats have all been bought with the help of loans so they aren't exactly squatting anymore. I've been in some of the other ones that didn't last that long though. It's very hard to open one up now in NYC unless you want to try to find a building in a terrible area and even then, it's difficult. I know nothing about L.I.
