Gasp; are those things patently absurd?

Depends what religion. Many spiritualists believe in such things as gnomes and fairies etc.
Most myths and legends are based on something real. These creatures have been in novels for years and years who's to say they aren't real?
Christians and other religions don't believe in them either because they are told they don't exist or because they aren't mentioned anywhere in their holy book.
Personally i dont know weather i believe in them or not :-S

Because those things are in fictional books..... Whereas their myths are in the wholly truthful book called the bible!

I think you're giving them too much credit. How do you know they don't? I'll bet at least some do.
