So many people keep insisting that the bible says spare the rod, spoil the child. Where does it say this at?? My bible says in proverbs 13:23 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Have you ever noticed how many kids are said to have A.D.D. I really believe that some of them are that way because of lack of disclipline. My nephew is suppose to have A.D.H.D, but at my house he's perfect because he knows I dont put up with that kind of misbehavior. How can he control himself with me, but not his mother? If you have this disorder then it doesnt who you are around. I might be wrong, but what do you think

I'm a firm believer in the rod and use have used it on my own children and I know it works.
I'm not just talking about the kids that actually have a.d.d., I'm talking about how it seems every child that misbehaves is said to have it, when most of it seems to be lack of disclipline

Its really sad that in this day and age, parents would rather give their kids a pill, rather then teach them how to behave.Im not saying its ok to beat your kids senseless. But you have to let them know their boundaries.Alot of parents are so busy chasing the almighty dollar, the babysitter is closer to their kids than they are.Its a fact that its hard to make ends meet without two incomes, but dont neglect your kids!Teach them proper behavior!! Go into any store on a Saturday and you`ll see what I mean. All you hear is squalling children, wanting everything and refusing to listen to mom and dad. My brother and I would have never argued and lashed out at our parents in public. We had respect for them. And our parents seldom disiplined us because of that respect. I think they should have a mandatory class in high school on the how to be a parent. It couldnt hurt.

I dont believe in ADD or ADHD. I think that these so called disorders are caused from lack of parenting. The parents dont pay enough attention to their kids. They put them in front of the t.v. as a babysitter, give them playstations and what have you. If you notice with these kids they have plenty of an attention span to play these games for hours on end, or watch t.v for hours, but ask them to do something like homework forget it. I remember when ADD came about, they were saying this child is out of control, they are running and jumping and playing (basically doing what kids do) but teachers and doctor's say this was not normal now. To me it it is because of lack of attention and a big lack in discipline

Yeah, i agree. The bible says one thing, America wants to alter it to fit their means. Nothin new. But I think the "spare the rod" part isn't literal, I think it's symbolic of just not disciplining or chastening your child at all. There are way too many misbehavin kids in this country for parents just to sit by and let their children walk all over them. Somethin needs to be done about it: whether spankings, scoldin, timeout, somethin. It's maddness in households these days.

Of the many versions of rewrites of the Bible, you'll find the "spare the rod" phrase in two of them.
Today's New International Version
New Living Translation
The reference is to Proverbs 13:24
He who spares his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.
BibleGateway.Com has a pretty formidable search engine for the versions in many different langauges, too.

The phrase is a take off from the verse...
Proverbs 13:24
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
Which I think you meant to reference. It basically means the same thing, though there are many spin offs that come out completely different. For example.
Phillipians 1:23
I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
People use the above phrase to prove that we go to heaven immediately upon death. To do so the words "I desire" must be removed from the phrase. A person can "desire" many things, but that doesn't make it so.
Cheers

I agree completely AMEN! I think that the majority of ADD and ADHD cases are just a matter of disciplining the mind. This whole ADD movement didn't begin that long ago. It's that fact that kids are watching flashy television that is choppy so it keeps their attention. No one reads anymore. If kids did more reading and less TV watching I think we would have a miraculous drop in ADD ADHD cases.

Amen and Amen. I love when someone quotes from KJV. There is alot of kids who need a good old fashion butt whipping like I use to get. I believe in making a kid mind and behave and if that requires a whippin once in awhile then so be it. I do not believe in beating a kid. I hate when I see parents tell there kid if you dont stop that I will get you and they keep saying that and the kid gets away with whatever they was doing. You lazy parents get off your butt and whip the kids instead of threating them.

Kids are confused because they have no guidelines. They can do whatever they like because there are laws to stop mum smacking legs and bottoms and they can say what they want to the teacher because discipline if forbidden. I think we are politically correct enough now to fall into total chaos. Our kids don't stand a chance.

Hitting children has been clearly shown (by far more scientific sources than the bible) to be a very ineffective form of discipline.
I hope the thumbs down are in response to my pejorative attitude towards the bible, because my comment about discipline is basically an objective fact.
Some examples, for those of you too lazy to find them:
"[...] although physical punishment may produce conformity in the immediate situation, in the longer run it tends to increase the probability of deviance, including delinquency in adolescence and violent crime inside and outside the family as an adult." [1]
"[...] spanking predicted an increase in the level of problem behavior over time, controlling for income-needs ratio and maternal emotional support." [2]
The idea that physical punishment works is an illusion. Sure, the child will behave while you're there, because he's scared of being hit. Similarly, if you tied him to a chair he'd behave. But when he's not with someone who hits him, the effect stops immediately. So when he's at school, or with friends, or when he leaves home, your punishments will have no effect. He doesn't behave because he's disciplined, he behaves because he's scared.

You are assuming that everyone diagnosed with ADD is a badly behaved child. What about adults who deal with this disorder? Do they also need to be spanked? You should learn a little more about add and adhd before you spread this type of hurtful opinion around.
