You have to pull the ticks off that is embedded in the skin, please say you have had your dog updated on the Lyme disease shots, if not you may have to have the dog tested for Lyme disease, for the how to get rid of the fleas and ticks, go on line and look up front line I am not sure but front line is used once a month on your animals and works great, also buy a tick and fleas shampoo and while bathing let the soap really soak in to the skin and rinse well. Check the Internet for front line that is the product you want to get if you can't find it my bro in law use to use yeast and water and bath the dogs in that, as they lived in jersey 10 aches of land and tons of deer ticks, it worked believe it or not. I suggest that only if you can not get the front line over the Internet. Good luck and I hope your baby is OK.

You do need stuff from a vets because it's the only stuff that works properly.

As suggested - Frontline or Advantage/Advantix. Bathing isn't going to help. You also need to treat your house, because if your dogs has fleas they WILL also be present in the environment. You need to break the flea life cycle to be truly flea-free - when you've done this you can use Frontline Plus every 6 weeks to remain flea free.

As for finding a vet - how can you not know where your nearest is? Were you planning to wait until you were in a panic becuase your dog was seriously ill or injured before you found it?

Get your telephone directory and look in there.

Some fleas and ticks have to be removed manually. Shellgard has soaps, shampoos and anti-flea powder. I let soap and shampoo soak through the hair for a few minutes, then use a fine-toothed comb to removes les animales. If there are really plenty of ticks, I bathe my dog 2x a week, then really follow up with anti-flea powder. In the farms they use a chemical (?) called Sevin as powder, letting it stay on the dog to kill fleas.

The best product out there for repelling fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes is Biospot, and it is now water repellent and far less expensive than Advantix. When removing a tick, take tweezers and grab the tick where it enters the dog and pull straight up. That will get the head out.

The only thing I have found to work for fleas is Advantage. I think Advantix is for fleas and ticks. You can get it on Ebay where it is cheaper than at a vet. Baths, collars, sprays, etc., have never worked for my animals. With Advantage, you dont have to worry about your house. Treat the dog, and any fleas living in the house will die, when they come in contact with your dog. The directions are for once a month treatment, but I have found I only need one application on them through flea season.

Hi, I am a vet tech. just some advise.
DO NOT USE TOPICAL TREATMENTS! (ie, frontline, advantage...) They are extremely dangerous for animals and people. if you read the package it tells you to wear gloves and wash immediately if you come in contact with it. if it burns your skin and can send you to the doctors office, imagine what it will do to your dog. animals skin is way more sensitive than ours. I get the research studies through work on the topicals. They make your jaw drop. Animals have gotten tumors, seized, developed severe skin allergies and even died. Fleas and ticks become immune to the topical applications, so they have to make them stronger every year.
there is a wonderful product called Flea Free by Green Hope Farms. It is a flower essence that you put in the H2O dish daily. works great on fleas and ticks. To remove them is a little more complicated. Wash the pup with a natural shampoo, and comb with a flea comb. You can use Diatom. earth which is great for prevention and removal. it got rid of both of my cat's fleas within 2 days with it, and it is very safe. You can also add garlic to the diet. simple, but it works great. natural topical sprays are good too. neem oil works good.
for removing them from your house, vaccuum everyday, and put the bag outside away from your house. they can breed in the bag. also, very simple, but really effective. get a light bulb about a foot off the ground, and put sticky paper under it. Fleas are attracted to warmth, and will jump right on the paper.
to find a vet, i would suggest going to AHVMA.org. they list all the safe vets around the world.
Please email me at beautifuldzastr8@aol.com if you have any other questions. Good Luck!

It sounds like you have a heavy infestation. Bathing alone will not take care of this, since she is getting re-infested from the surrounding area.

The only way to get rid of them is to buy a flea and tick medication such as Frontline and put it on the dog. The vet office carries this. I don't understand your statement that you can't go to the vet because you don't know where it is??? If you have a dog, you must have a vet?

Bathe her in Dawn dish soap. Suds her up and leave it on a few minutes before rinsing.
You can get frontline or advantix online. You have to put it on either 2 days before or 2 days after a bath, but don't put it on then bathe her with Dawn 2 days later as Dawn will remove it. (dog shampoos don't, so get a dog flea shampoo ASAP)
You can get a flea comb in the pet stores. Concentrate especially on the neck area and the base of the tail; have a bowl of soapy water handy to rinse off the fleas and ticks it will pull out. Looks like a nit comb (for head lice)
Also there is a pill called capstar that will kill every FLEA on them (won't touch the ticks however)
Keep your / her environment CLEAN - vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Wash and dry her bedding (in a dryer - heat kills the fles eggs) Set off a flea bomb and then another 2 weeks later. Spread an insecticide on the lawn areas she uses and water it in.
There's plenty you can do. Weekly baths are not a good idea as they dry out her skin.
Check your phone book or ask the neighbors about a vet recommendation. If she is that covered with fleas the odds are extremely high she will have tapeworm as well. The vet can sell you the advantix and capstar.

We use frontline for our three dogs and that work really good! but also bathing is going to hgelp somwhat but if the fleas are also where the dog live like in the house or somthing than its going to be hard to keep the fleas off for good and another thing that even after you bath them there going to itch because they will still have the bites from the fleas
