first things first, preventing any further infections of your laptop.
www.grisoft.com, if you sniff around there you'll be able to download the latest version of AVG, an excellent antivirus with constant updates and a proffesional feel to it, you can make it so that it's scheduled to run when your pc is inactive, so you'll cut down on memory usage.
www.lavasoft.com , Ad-aware 6.0 , theres a free version of a Anti-spyware/adware program, which runs when you tell it to in order to eliminate spyware and ads and tracking cookies from your internet cache at the touch of a button, very effective, and free.
www.zonelabs.com, Zone Alarm is a highly efficient, free, personal firewall, allows you to allow/deny internet access requests at the touch of a button, and you can tell it to remember rules for programs that use the internet often ( like Firefox, so if you use the internet alot, you wont have to keep telling it to allow it).
the firewall is ESSENTIAL when using a wireless connection, due to its nature.
ok, make sure to keep your internet cache clear, right click on internet explorer, go into internet options, and clear history / delete files button. that'll get rid of all the old images of websites you've visited.
have you ever defragmented your system? after awhile, due to the nature of hard-drives and volumes, your files end up scattered everywhere all over your hardrive. this causes instability and slowness, the solution? defragmenting.
no additional software needed, go to Programs > Accessories > system Tools > Defragmenter, defrag each of your harddrives ( it takes awhile though, but you'll notice a difference).
finall, give consideration to using a Raid-style configuration of your harddrives. laptops tend to be limited by slower harddrive speeds to conserve battery power, but by using Raid format, you can get two drives to work as a single drive, meaning you end up having a little less space overall, but access times and write times for data are greatly improved. for raid configuration you'd have to check your harddrive manufacturers website for support, and would require two identical harddrives, same capacity, make, and speed.
hope that helps.

First of all, the more you put on your Laptop the slower it will run so logicly the easyest way to make your PC go faster is to remove items you no longer need. use add/remove any programs you remove go to search and search for that program you may see some bits left from that program in search delete these as well do this every time you delete a program this may take several restarts to get rid of all of them. There are no programs that will make your PC run faster but there is a lot that you can do to help. oK follow this carefully. My computer/WINDOWS/cursors/ open this folder and U will see lots delete the first two row's at the end of the third row there will be a black arrow and half way along the same row there will be another like it. KEEP this row. go below that like and delete all the others, you should be left with one row of arrows. OK come out of there and look for a file called SYSTEM 32. take care in this area and do exactly what I say. look for a folder called OOBE, open this folder and look for a filder called IMAGES, delete all those, come out of there and look for a folder called MOUSE open that and look for another folder called IMAGES open that and delete all those go back to desktop and empty bin. Ok MY COMPUTER again but this time go Propertys and CLEAN DISK back to desktop and empty bit which should have nothing in it. restart your laptop this should now have helped to speed your PC up a bit there are other things but just have not the space to explain sorry Hope this helps

If you use the laptop online a lot and it is potentially infected, run software to find/eliminate unwanted stuff like spyware and trojans. Since they're free and make a good 1-2 punch, I always recommend you start with 'Spybot Search & Destroy' ( http://www.spybot.com/ ) and AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php).
Use AVG's free antivirus, too. http://free.grisoft.com
There are also utilities for cleaning out unwanted processes, freeing disk space, registry cleaners... maybe someone else here can make recommendations on them.
Beyond that, scrounge up the original CD's that came with the laptop, save all your personal/important data to a memory stick or USB hard drive, and format/reinstall. That's a serious pain, but it'll clean out all sorts of cruft and junk. And start watching for Ubuntu linux: if you see it on CD, try it out... it is rapidly approaching good-enough-to-get-rid-of-Windows.

First, is your laptop old?
Older computers, even if you don't download newer software, runs slower and slower with time, in my experience, if you don't upgrade it.
Running more software is not going to help your laptop run faster. You should download something like ad-aware, and an antivirus program to check what you have on your computer.
I often twiddle with msconfig to disable things that annoy me.
Every once in a while, I clean my computer up by formatting it (I'm very unorganized, so I have files everywhere)

If it used to be faster, your laptop is infected with malware.
You need: an Anti-virus, a Firewall, and Windows Defender, Spybot, AdAware and Spyware Blaster (all 4, all free).
Google for them and learn how to use them.

Sure it sounds like you have either a virus or malware.
try spybot search and destroy found at http://www.spybot.com
also I use Superantispyware found at http://www.superantispyware.com
after downloading them and getting the updates run it in safe mode.
then do a disk cleanup, and defrag your computer
then restart in normal mode
