I think people knew you weren't talking about humans. They were making the comparison - inbreeding in dogs is wrong for fundamentally the same reasons as in humans. Let me try to explain this:

Human inbreeding became socially unacceptable BECAUSE people realised long ago that the result is often very unhealthy, if not downright deformed. This is the source of the reason we now think human inbreeding is so gross.

It's the same with dogs. Yes, breeders will 'line breed' - but not if they're responsible. Basic genetics teaches this is a bad idea - you need to get a good sampling of genes from different animals, not just keep it in the family. Yes in the past inbreeding in dogs has happened to preserve the AESTHETICALLY desired traits of a breed, not the health traits.

A responsible breeder will select animals that have been checked and can be sure to be free from breed defects, and that are NOT related. Inbreeding is in fact the reason why many rabbits need their incisors extracted - inbreeding has caused the teeth to grow congenitally wonky so that the only option is regular trimming or extraction. Just an example.

If you wish to breed (and I don't advise it) DO YOUR RESEARCH - and don't get your info from your mother-in-law!

Can and should are incredibly different. It is entirely possible to breed mother/son father/daughter brother/sister. Is it a good idea? No, not at all. If you want to breed, do your homework, check out shows, and get a pair of worthy dogs to breed instead of your pet. Just because your dog is perfect to you doesn't mean that it's pups will be perfect to others, and dogs can have a lot of puppies that you'll either get stuck with or pawn off to people who'll realise they aren't house-trained and drop them off at the shelter due to "behavioral problems" saying that it keeps peeing on the carpet.

In fact, please... just don't breed. And get the poor dogs away from your mother-in-law, she sound like an idiot if she thinks inbreeding is OK.

Sorry but it's still wrong. Your mother-in-law is adding to animal problems. There are the same problems as with humans. She is ruining that type of dog (whatever breed) and soon it's temperment will be poor and it could be the potential end of people wanting them.
If she can't afford to breed with a dog of another genetic line...she shouldn't breed at all. I hope she doesn't call herself a "Breeder"...if so, please do the world a favour and call and report her so it can stop! Sounds like she's just money hungry and not into the dogs at all.

My answer remains the same. You should NOT breed mother and son/father and daughter. That's inbreeding and the pups will likely have health problems. Why do you want to breed your dog? Arn't there already enough dogs in shelters? I'm sure if you have a sickly, costly litter of pups, you're not going to take them all to the vet.

Katie they were just giving you an example. Your mother in law is wrong. You should never inbreed in the same family. It can led to some awful deformations and from your first question there is already so much in breeding going on that any defect can just show up at this point. You need new blood a dog who is not realted to any of the other dogs.

This is definitely not a good avenue to follow. If you can't improve the breed--Don't breed!

Any reputable breeder would not in breed any breed. This causes a lot of genetic problems. This makes for a very limited gene pool. And because of this the puppies as well as the new owners will suffer a lot of health problems, vet bills, mental problems. etc...

Bottom Line! Don't Do It. Please

It's considered line breeding if you are a breeder and inbreeding if you are anyone else. It is an accepted practice in some circumstances. In those circumstances it should be done to preserve the conformation of the breed...not just be bred because you decided to keep some pups to breed rather than purchase a quality female. there needs to be no prior line-breeding within 3 generations. Father to daughter is acceptable--sis to bro is not...even if they are from different litters or are 1/2 siblings...next, it is considered wrong to breed a mother to a son. It completely defeats the purpose of linebreeding...so if you do it because you don't want pay for a female or because you just want to breed is just plain inbreeding. If you want info feel free to go to my website...I'm a breeder as well and I prefer to buy dogs not Linebred unless it was done for show purposes only...and then just once. http://ok5danes.tripod.com/pits

Inbreeding and line breeding is done by serious breeders who have done some homework and want to preserve certain traits of a particular line. It is not without risks and does require culling when things, even with the best intentions do not turn out as planned. Do not attempt it without having the experience required first.

No you can not inbreed your animals your mother inlaw was miss informed.
Do not do this as your basically giving them health issues before they are even born. Would you mate with your sister/brother mother/father??????
No neither would I so the answer to your question is not to be silly & to find a good breeder that has a stud available & do it that way, not the cheap way around.
