If somebody had said this to me)(and they have) I would have answered, either, "hey yourself!" with a smile, or "nada mucho"(my way of being just mellow) and or "hey! I am doin' great, how 'bout you?" etc...Just be "real" and in the moment, and answer them politely! I think that people do ask, also to be friendly...not to be mean...or rude!
Maybe we all need to really get back to how people USED to be, way way back...since before I was born...(in the 60's)! When I was growing up, people did greet people on the sidewalk...and sometimes,I will admit, I would close down(and get a little shy now and then...and I still do) but, I would rather hear a" Hiya!", than a "hey you stupid *&^%!" which I hear alot, and I think that this is sooooo OLD! It needs to go back to where people had care, concern and love to share and spare! Ya know?
Life would be a lot more fun,and enjoyable, if we all tried a LOT harder at being kinder to one another...I also need this lesson sometimes, myself! But, I do think that living would be pleasanter...what do you think?

Those are just different ways of saying "Hello", but they are asking a little more. They are also asking something like "What have you been doing"/ "What have you been up to"
So you can respond something like: "Hey man, I'm fine", or just tell them what you've been doing lately...

Hey, hmm, that has not been my experience. Generally, people say hi or hello. And I respond with the same. I would simply respond with hello. God bless****

Yea, hey man's cool. Or hi, or any of those terms.
Personally, I go, 'hi Amanda' [or who ever] and say it with warmth and a big smile and maybe a vigourous wave.

I hear ya. You're right. I hate when a doctor says "How are you doing?" but conversationally. I mean how I'm doing is why I'm here! But good form says your supposed to respond in the positive so you're supposed to say "Fine, yourself?" I end up saying "Great, except for this whopping great hole in my leg. You?"
