When engine running & airflow unit plugged in the engine runs even, When airflow unit unplugged it runs evenish. When the fan cuts in the head lights slightly flicker, when pressing the window switch the engine pitch changes, when releasing the window switch engine goes back to normal.

Sounds like an electric problem. Check your battery is sound. If it is then the next thing would be to check that the alternator is ok. As you haven't mentioned starting problems I would suspect the alternator. Cheap and easy to replace. Try a scrapyard, for an extra couple of quid someone there might do it for you.

Actually, this sounds about normal.

When the airflow sensor is disconnected, the computer goes into error mode and uses a preset programme to control the engine emissions, hence the slight roughness.

A SLIGHT headlight flicker at tickover with a load on the electrical system is normal. It should be less noticeable to non-existent at fast idle or driving speeds.

The change in the engine pitch when operating the power window is due to the load put on the alternator. An alternator may whine slightly under load. Power windows draw a fair bit of current. Again, this is quite normal.

A quick charging system & battery test at any motor factors or garage should ease your mind.

There will be a drop in voltage when you use the electric windows - they do draw a lot of power from the battery - so on tickover the engine does drop off slighty - when you are moving you wouldn't notice this effect because the alternator is supplying the extra needed.

Try this - on tickover press firmly on the brake pedal - does the engine rev drop slightly - if so then not too much to worry about - this is the servo unit and the result is basically the same - power is being used to operate the servo unit on the brakes and there is not enough guts in the battery to keep the revs up.

Same for the fan - the initial burst of power it uses when it kicks in causes the lights to flicker - but it should not be continual - only when it initially kicks in

a cvh is gonna run dog rough if the mass airflow sensor is unplugged. thats why its there!

go to kwik fit and ask them to run a check on your charging system, should be pushing out 14 volts from the alternator.

by "pitch" do you mean sound? does the rev counter twitch when using the leccy windows? older fords do this, you can fit a "suppressor" to fix the problem but its not really an issue.

get a reconditioned alternator from your local garage for about £15 , theres only 3 bolts to undo and the wires unplug from the connector so change it yourself .
