Babies have to be squeezed out of a tight-fitting hole pretty early on. To make this a realistic option, we evolved to have several bones that are unfused at first, allowing increased bending and suppleness. Thing about it...you can bend your spine (with all it joints) better than you can bend your arm between the elbow and the shoulder, where there's only 1 bone.
Throughout life, especially early on, the bones will begin fusing together.

Babies have more bones, especially in their craniums, so the difficulty of childbirth can be survived. The bones then fuse together as they grow, ending with the average 206 bones.
