Who did you serve with and do you have friends still there? - this establishes the context.

Are you glad to be home and what did you miss the most? – this is a personal question

Would you give me your opinion of how you had it there in the larger scheme of things and have you heard anyone telling it like you saw it? - this establishes the “Big picture”

I have quite a few friends been and back – these three questions (or similar) asked respectfully will usually get them to open up and discuss their feelings and emotions.

Where did you serve ? Did you see action ? What do you remember most vividly about it ? There are other questions to be asked, but these are the primary questions whose answers will bring the other ones out. buckeye
