Monogamy is the rule whereas polygamy crime in India but with an exception, Indian Muslims can go in for polygamy & can have four valid wives because of their personal Muslim Sharia law. It is offence if any one else commits polygamy in India section 494 & 495 of the Indian Penal Code clearly provides punishment for such an offence if proved by sufficient evidence. Any polygamous marriage is illegal & void according to all matrimonial laws applicable in India with the exception of Muslim Sharia law, the second or third wife or husband as the case maybe will not enjoy the benefits applicable to any such legal spouse in cases of insurances & inheritance, maintenance etc. For any more legal guidance on this subject writes to me directly. vijay_mahajan5758@yahoo.co.in.

You are absolutely wrong.

in India it that is Polygamy is not wide . It is not accepted and people are respecting it, that is true to be his one wife.

In some non Indian religions it may be there as per their scriptures...but it is not Indian way please.

In western countries most people betray the promise they make at the wedding time and and entertain indirect POLYGAMY that is having illicit connections with many though they have a wife.So it is in those lands POLYGAMY exists.NOT IN INDIA.

Monogamy became law for most Indians in 1935 time frame.

Muslims are still allowed 4 wives but other way is not allowed.

There was a movement and some states may have eliminated polygamy for Muslims also, around 1972 time frame.

India still has senatorial courts(base on religious laws and practises), and they are based on culture and religion, they make ruling on limited topic such as, secession, community (family)property, inheritance, marriages and divorces,.....all other are governed by civil law.

People who are married by priest fall under sectorial law of the religion, people who get married in a civil arrangement at civil court by an oficiating court oficial fall under the civil act. Most people now a days have both marraiges this protects a muslim female as far as poligamy goes.

No absolutely not….your thoughts about India are way behind 19th century. It’s modern India now. Peoples are started to think and started to live for the love not for lust so one man having multiple wives or one woman having multiple husbands are not allowed in morden india.
