I am 24, married, and looking to start a family. I am 5ft5, and 13.5 stone. I have read that I may need to loose weight to get pregnant, although I have a regular cycle of 29 days. Is this true, or one of those myths? I am confused as the more I read the more contradicting info I find. Is there a right thing to do or way to get pregnant? I also suffer with wheat intollerance, Will my wheat intollerance affect amything? i only found out within the last 12 months, so am still learning about it.
Thankyou

Hi! I myself was overweight when I tried conceiving, and after 6 months of trying, I found I was pregnant. I know being physically healthy does help in your chances of getting pregnant and it's ideal throughout the pregnancy as well (being overweight increases chances of having gestational diabetes and preeclampsia). However, overweight women get pregnant and have healthy babies everyday. Just be sure to take a vitamin supplement, eat nutritous meals, get moderate exercise, and follow the instructions of your doctor.
I'm sorry but I don't know anything about wheat intollerance and pregnancy... that would be a good question to ask your Ob/Gyn (doctor).
Good luck!!

Hi there you are definitely not too overweight I weigh quite some more than that and I am now 25 weeks pregnant - if you are healthy and your cycle is normal you shouldn't have a problem just look after yourself during pregnancy and you might even find out that you will be lighter once you have given birth. There is no real right way or wrong way of doing things - I took a year to fall pregnant but I do not smoke at all and hardly consumed any alcohol. The wheat intollerance will not affect it as I have a friend with the exact same problem and she has just had a beautiful baby girl. Best of luck hope this has helped...

I totally get what you are saying people didn't notice I was pregnant until two weeks ago and I only gained eight pounds I'm almost 32 weeks, I work in retail, and I would get customers that would get nasty when I told them I couldn't pick things up (you know that stop being lazy look I know you can help me) I had one lady who had her cart behind her and I couldn't reach her bag of dog food and she was like then come over here and get it to where you can reach it was a 40lb bag, people are just insensitive sometimes, you are just carrying differently then some women we are all unique, but soon enough you'll have your baby and you won't have to worry any longer, I know you are not fat so feel better Congratulations on the new addition!

Honey if you are 5 ft. 5 and only weigh 108 pounds you need to worry about being too THIN to get pregnant not too fat!
Are you sure that you did the conversion thing right? What you are describing means that you are super-skinny.
I can only answer your question by saying that if you are really that thin and still having regular periods I would imagine that you can concieve. I would worry about your ability to maintain a pregnancy while you are that thin and would hope that you could gain some healthy weight. I know that some women are just naturally tiny, I personally have what they call a "super-small frame", (size 5 shoe and size 4 ring) so I do know that some women are just very petite but you still need to try to put on some weight.
Now, if I totally misunderstood and you really are heavy then I would tell you not to worry about it. Skinny women have more problems getting pregnant than women who are over-weight. There must be a certain amount of fat present in order for you to ovulate regularly. However, when a woman is morbidly obese it can interfer with her fertility. That is not what you are describing. Where do you think all the over-weight mothers come from? In any case pregnancy is NOT the time to try to lose weight. You will deprive yourself of the nutrition that you need to feel well and also to breastfeed your baby properely. Breastfeeding BTW, will burn up to 1000 calories a day if you are totally breastfeeding your baby (that means no supplements). I would definitely hope that you would do that.
All in all I am sure that you are not as heavy as you think you are! Women never are! Did you know that men always describe themselves as being much thinner than they really are while us women will always say that we weigh more than we actually do!? That is awful. We need to work on our self image! Pregnant women are beautiful no matter what their weight is!
Relax and have fun getting pregnant. Stop stressing out about your weight. If you need more reassurance, talk to you doctor (hopefully a woman!) she will make you feel much better.
Good luck and love and blessings.
Lady Trinity~***I see that someone re-calculated your weight at 189 pounds. That is a bit different than 108! I would agree that you are over-weight but not to an extent that it will interfer with your getting pregnant. I have to add that in as much as you are not pregnant right now it would be a healthy idea to try to lose a bit of weight before getting pregnant. That way when you gain the healthy amount of weight that you need to gain while pregnant you will not be as uncomfortable as you will be if you get pregnant now. Good luck honey!***

I'd just stop worrying about it if I were you. The more you worry, the less likely you are to conceive. I would advise, having myself put on tonnes of weight during pregnancy, and taken a year to shift it, that if you plan to get pregnant you should, for your own sake, try and lose as much as possible beforehand. This is simply because otherwise, you may well end up really not enjoying looking in a full-length mirror afterwards. Even after you've lost the weight. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm being realistic, speaking from bitter experience, and want to help.

Don't panic. I was more overweight (15 stone) than you are currently when I fell pregnant in 2005. I fell pregnant after losing about 2 stone (was 17) so I think my body was a bit relieved that I wasn't carrying so much weight around that it allowed me to get pregnant.
Although I was very sick throughout my pregnancy I did have a relatively trouble free pregnancy but due to my son using the umbillical cord as a tie I did end up having an emergency c-section

Sometimes losing a little weight does help women get pregnant that are overweight. If your cycle is regular, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If your cycle becomes irregular (due to being overweight) then yes, you'll probably need to lose a few pounds.
I'm not sure how much 13.5 stone is but if you're way overweight then there are other health concerns that could become an issue when/if you become pregnant.

I was overweight when I got pregnant with my daughter and even though there were no complications or anything I felt worse afterwards coz I had a lot more weight to lose. A lot of doctors say it's harder for an overweight women to concieve but obviously not in my case. I'm currently ttc my second and I'm dieting now to lose some weight before it happens. Your wheat intolerance won't affect anything so don't worry

13.5x14=189 lbs or 85.9 kgs
at 5 foot 5 you are over weight but you have regular cycle so you should be fine. the amount of weight you would need to lose to help get pregnant is minimal anyway, just losing 5% of you body weight or in your case 9 1/2 pounds or less then 1/2 a stone can help you get pregnant.
go see your doctor to rule out any under laying problems and then try for a year.
also if your under 25 years old then some doctor will say to try on your own for 2 years before seeking medical treatment.

If your periods are regular and you don't have female problems, you probably can get pregnant. The best thing to do would be to have a GYNO checkup. Go over your history with your doctor and let him/her advise if things look okay. I'm overweight and got pregnant. My doctor was more concerned about general health than the weight itself. So if you plan on getting pregnant start taking prenatal vitamins, eat healthier, start getting some exercise, reduce stress, and get lots of sleep. This goes for every woman, regardless of her weight.
Also, the wheat intolerance has nothing to do with fertility or pregnancy. However, it may be genetic. So if you get pregnant, you may want to have your little one tested.
Good luck!
