In a course at uni (environmental physiology) we did an experiment on this...I was the lucky guinea pig chosen for this one.
I had a thermosensor taped to my index finger which I then had to hold in ICE WATER for 30mins......
I had to comment when I felt pain.....what transpired was painful I have to say but basically its a mechanism to stop you from dying.....when you initially get cold the blood vessels literally contract and this causes pain.....after a period of time, they have to let blood in or the tissue will die so they open up again....and again more pain.
When I was feeling pain (as it would come and go) te temperature in my finger would go up (meaning blood vessels were open and blood was coming in and warming it up) and when my finger went cold and I had pain it was them closing down the vessels.
So actually feeling the pain is good as its your body telling you to get out of the damn cold! When it doens;t do that, you body has pretty much given up and is not coping with the cold and doesn't respond anymore....

One of the symptoms that can occur with arthritis is having the cold hurt the joints. The only way to find out for sure what is going on is to see your dr to have this evaluated to see what they think could be causing the problem.

The skin can only tolerate a range of temperature. Exceeding that, it begins to feel pain. In extreme high temp like burns, we all know why this hurt. Its because of the intense heat. However, did you know that in extreme cold, skin can burn too?

This is because nociceptors (or receptors for pain) which are present in our skin, can only adapt to the normal range of temperature our skin can. Anything above or below normal temp is considered pain.
