Hi,...

It may be normal and it may be not...it should be seen!!

It may be normal pain ...but if it persists too long ..2 possibilties come to my mind:

1-Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis( Inflamation of the vein)...or(inflamation+ clot in the vein)...this may ease alone...or if worsened may need anitibiotics....

2-Nerve damage..

I think 3 weeks is too long...I advice u too see a doctor...but dont worry...it would not be something frightening..but go and check..

Sometimes your vein is bruised and it takes that long to heal. I usually go through the same thing, major discoloring, too. Put ice on it, maybe that will ease the pain.

No, this is not normal. It sounds like this area was bruised by the IV but the only way to find out for sure is to have this evaluated by the dr to see what they think is going on.

happened to my wife in nursing school. they were taking each others blood, a student put a butterfly in my wife's hand. she had the same symptoms that you have. her instructor said that the needle hit a nerve. not normal but not bad either, just uncomfortable, it should go away soon.
