The Q is how can you look at this world and still possibly think this is all there is?

My belief is that you do have only one life so make the most of it because it is short. Yes, have fun and enjoy yourself, but not at the detrement of others. The past is important because you must realise your mistakes from the past. Therefore, today does actually have a meaning tommorrow or in two weeks time. There is something better after this world. How do we know, read the scriptures.
Why do people question the scriptures? because some of the claims in them seem unbelievable for the human mind to comprehend. We try and think logically, if it doesn't make sense then it is rejected.
If anyone asks, is there more to life than this? Yes there is, just read the Qur'an with an open mind. You will be surprised with the facts that it contains.
This can be the best life, if you make it like that. It can also be the worst life depending on how you live it.

Because you don't know if there even is an afterlife. There's actually no evidence for it, no one has ever come back from the dead. (NDE do not count, that is a result of the brain being deprived of oxygen.)

I do not want to waste what might be my only shot at existence hoping and planing for the hereafter. The way I figure it, you live a good life and if you die and there is an afterlife great, if not then you didn't waste your only life waiting around for the next one that never came. You do not have all eternity, that you cannot just drift along waiting for your real life to begin at some point in the future (worst of all AFTER you are dead.) When you realize that your life is short, that you do not have all the time in the world; you must go out and enjoy life as much as you possibly can! You must go out and go after the things in life you love.

What makes you think because not everyone follows your religion that sees life as meaningless? If anything I believe it is the opposite. I feel that the goal of life is simple. It is to thrive and be happy. None of us had a "choice" in whether or not we were born, but now that we are alive we have the power to either enjoy it or end it. If you find yourself in a situation, you should strive to make the best of it. Increase your happiness. Have fun with things. If you're going to be alive anyways, you might as well have a good time while you're at it.

Are you assuming that making the most out of one life means only living for each day?

Tomorrow still has a meaning, i'm going to do some things to enjoy myself.

Next week still has meaning, i'm going to do some things to enjoy myself.

I would like to think there is something better but the fact that a few storywriters say there is doesn't really convince me. Humans can lie.

"which means no day has any meaning."

See, I don't get that about believers. Is God the only thing that keeps you going? What about family, parents, loved ones, children, friends? Not to mention all the experiences, sights, feelings, the lot of it?

Objectively, there IS no purpose to life. Purpose and Goals are human concepts that do not map well to nature. The best you could say is that your purpose is to pass on your genes.

WE, the self-aware pattern-matching hairless descendants of the great ape line MAKE our own purpose in life. There is nothing better.

I think you're talking about nihilism, the idea that without a supernatural authority then life is meaningless. I beleive that every day matters. We create our own meaning. Live well, love freely and die fearlessly. If there is an afterlife it is a matter best lest to the dead and absolutely no concern for the living.

This world isn't all there is. We've only seen a miniscule percentage of the universe as a whole, and there's plenty to keep us busy.

I can 'look at this world and think that's all there is' because I don't see any compelling evidence to the contrary. Your assertion that there is a parallel universe designed to hold the psychic essences of dead humans is, frankly, absurd.

It might be *nice* to believe it. That doesn't make it true.

Just because there's only one life, it doesn't mean there isn't meaning to life. That's kind of the whole point--don't look for meaning after this life; find the meaning right now. Stop waiting for someone else to give your life meaning (even if that someone is your God). It's your life; you give it meaning.

The thing is, believing something does not make it so. Just because you believe there is hope or meaning, doesn't mean there actually is.

Look, "I believe I am surrounded by 30 beautiful naked virgins all lusting after me." (looks around)

See nothing happened.

Are you suggesting that it would be best for me to lie to myself and continue pretending that I'm surrounded by a harem because it makes me feel better?

Yes, I can look at the universe and think this is all there is! I am an Astronomer, and appreciate just how much there is! It is an amazing, uncompromisingly wonderful universe. But it is also completely naturalistic. I do not need to invent any anthropomorphic invisible god-guy to try and make it more wonderful, thanks very much!
