It is megapixels, short for a million pixels. The pixel is the picture element (dot of colored info for an image) that combines with adjacent pixels to form an image.
Old cameras had 640 pixels wide by 480 high which was about .8 MP. Currently cameras are in the millions with pixels over 3000 wide and 3000 high for 10MP image.
