Islam has Ten Practices (Furu al-Din) and all good Muslims are supposed to follow them. These are: Salāt (Prayer), Sawm (Fast), Hajj (Pilgrimage), Zakāt (Alm-giving), Khums (One-fifth tax), Jihād (Struggle), Amr-Bil-Ma'rūf (Joining forces with the Good), Nahi-Anil-Munkar (Opposing what is evil), Tawalla (To love the followers of the Faith), Tabarra (To disassociate from those who oppose Allah or His Prophet PBUH).

What concerns me is Jihād. It has two elements: internal struggle to overcome one's own evil, and external struggle to destroy the evil outside (including destroying infidels).

I'm not a violent person and I wouldn't be comfortable if I had to kill people. So my question is, plain and simple: can Jihād completely exclude killing people?

I think Islam is the only religion that has all the answers I've been seeking all my life. The Qur'an is a beautiful book. I just need to know that there is no hidden violence in the precepts themselves.

Thank you all.

The term 'JIhad'..have been well explained by muslims here in the answers..i know as a muslim..one is on a constant jihad..with your self..most of the time..that is the first thing that stops u from evil doing and sinning..it is something very difficult to do..but it keeps u reminding you that you are human Allah is very merciful and he forgives just like that..one only has to ask once..TO struggle not to sin and to be good to yourself and others takes alot..even the non mulsims who are good people at heart keep positive and do good deeds insipte of anything negative that may come across their way..that is also jihad..
The other jihad the external where one deals with the evil of a society...one does not have to kill..u r forgetting there very fact ,that MOhammed (SAW) never killed anyone..and he was the best muslim to have lived on this planet..and therefor, jihad could be done to abolish and finish evil from the society..like cancer, homeless ness..aids..In islam you ONly fight and kill in self defence!!..when your life is being threatened..and u fear DEATH..only then..u may kill to save your own life..and which even the law of today abides by..Peace! and May Allah ,the most merciful bless u with the best on this true light u trying to search for your self..

If you think that jihad is killing infidels, why aren't we all doing it? This was invented by the Wahhabi's (a very fanatic branch of the Sunni sect in Saudi Arabia). Since the Saudi are super rich, they can afford to open up schools or mosques in the West to preach their own ideas of Islam. Have noticed that all the ones accused to terrorism have no mustache and long fuzzy beard? This is what Wahhabi's look like. They do not mind killing Muslims who appose them. If they are so much in love with their religion, why do they live in the West, which is full of deteriorated moral standards? Do they enjoy seeing woman half-naked in the streets? It's because they think they have a holly cause which is arousing hatered for the Westerners (among Muslims their) to result in many bombings. This serves the Super Powers as is distorts Islam and makes the world turn against us.
Greater Jihad is: fighting invaders of your country. That is all. But, it does not start without the Supreme Preacher calling for it. It has to be united, otherwise, you see each Muslim is holding a gun and shooting the invader as he pleases. No, it has to be a command to follow.
I hope you are not following a Wahhabi preacher to teach you how to convert, then you will join the Qaida before you know it. They will promise you heaven if you shoot US targets..blah...blah..blah. Be ware. Our Prophet said: "Wish for others what you wish for yourself".

i does not say that devil made me convert, lol. i don't have self assurance in god, subsequently i don't have self assurance in devil the two. i did not somewhat 'convert' to something. I in basic terms got here to a determination that the assumption of a god, such as a results of fact the single in the monotheistic religions, isn't working for me. If there's a god, i don't think of he might deliver human beings to 'Hell'. this is the stupidest concept to me. that throughout itself would have been adequate for my innovations to end believing in him. there are various greater different motives to record right here. life now's no better, yet not worse. a minimum of I have not any guilt over each and every thing, and no worry of a few recommend god who places human beings in hell. faith is there for people who choose education. i comprehend a thank you to be ethical without an invisible guy threatening me to take action with hearth. extra: do not attempt to say i don't comprehend the religion. i became into raised with sunday college, and have my short suras memorized. I did examine the finished Quran in English (that's dazzling and that i appreciate it), and studied different religions as nicely. it is not something against Islam. this is against the assumption of god customarily i don't believe.

Dont blame Islam for its some misguided followers. This game can be played with ALL religions.
Never take the media's word for it. Islam has NOTHING to hide. Go research Islam yourself, and you will realize it is above all other religions.
Dont be afraid to accept the truth - you are never guaranteed the next breath in life - when Allah wills, you are dead.
An-Nur - 24:46 (Quran)
We have indeed sent down (in this Qur'ân) manifest Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, lawful and unlawful things, and the set boundries of Islâmic religion, etc. that make things clear showing the Right Path of Allâh). And Allâh guides whom He wills to a Straight Path (i.e. to Allâh's religion of Islâmic Monotheism). (An-Nur 24:46)

Tentative reply... my friend Islam in the only true and beautiful religion in the world. The religion of the universe. The God is the god of the universe and not the Muslim alone. I think with my small knowledge that if any body comes in your territory like if Judah is our country. if some body invade our country that is our fa rd to fight the invader. cant we do that for our religion.
Congratulation for converting to Islam may Allah bless you. Health, wisdom and happiness. may Allah make to you a good practicing Muslim Ameen

Many of the thing That was logical then, is obsolete now, and if I remember correctly, it is said in Quran That keep advancing with time. Now I think this is the key that solves many of the of the problems surrounding Islam.

I am not a Muslim, but I lived in the middle east for many years.

I wish U the Best of Luck . And keep promoting the peace, and love.

That's shiism what you're talking about.

Islam has 5 pillars:
- shahadah (testimony) La ilaha illallah
- salaah (prayer) - pray 5 times a day
- sawm (fasting) - to fast the holy month of Ramadhan
- zakaah (purifying tax) - paid by rich for noble purposes
- hajj (pilgrimage) - to be performed at least once in a lifetime.

As you already there are many forms of Jihad, sometimes it involves, I think this verse explains that idea the best:

And what is wrong with you that you do not fight in the way of Allah, and for those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women and children, whose cry is: “Our Lord! Rescue us from this city, whose people are unjust, and appoint to us from You one who will protect us, and appoint to us from You a help”

Quran An-Nisa Chapter 4 Verse 75

You could compare Jihad to WWII, the allies fought to free themsleves from the fascist Ideology and military advancements of Hitler. In this situation I think anybody capable would step up to the mark. As did many young men back then when it was required of them.

The only thing worse than oppressing someone, is letting them opress you. There is no secret "holy war" is Islam that the media claims.

Hello brother; JIhad in Islam, and throughout the Islamic history was not killing. It's a kind of self defence. God says: "Prepare all means of power and chivalry to terrify the enemies of you and enemies of God" Sura 8 Verse 60. "واعدوا لهم ما استطعتم من قوة ومن رباط الخيل ترهبون به عدو الله وعدوكم واخرين من دونهم لا تعلمونهم الله يعلمهم وما تنفقوا من شيء في سبيل الله يوف اليكم وانتم لا تظلمون"

Muhammad interpreted this by saying: " God Wants Them to fear us and avoid war against us. He don't wont the battle to begin".

The point is you're obliged to carry a weapon and defend your country, home, wife. Killing a man who's trying to kill or raper your wife - God forbid - is not Violence , It's Jihad.

In India, the Muslim ancient Sultan "Jalal Al Dien Akbar" found himself in a dilemma one day as the country was about to be invaded and the army was not strong Enough. Jalal Al Din didn't take care of the army as much as he was giving great importance to culture and science. He thought as india is a peaceful nation, no one will attack it. When he found himself attacked. He sent to Muslims all over the world calling for "The sacred Jihad" which in this case was defending innocent peaceful people.

Welcome to Islam.
