Or Norwegian atheists? Or Swedish? Or Japaneze? Or Dutch? Or Finnish? Or Danish atheists?

Just wondering, because all those countries really have many, many people that claim not to believe in any gods. And before I start accusing them of the fact that in a foxhole they will probably find out what 'fake atheists' they have always been, I just wanted to be sure.

So, "no atheists in foxholes", is that a global thing, or does it only apply to the USA?

When you stare death in the face you need to get the hell out of there or sit tight and hope you don't get hit.

Saying "Oh God! Don't let me get hit!" is just a mantra with no religious conviction because if saying that actually worked then no-one would get hit. Obviously, as they do, it's kind of pointless.

It doesn't even apply to the USA. It's just a catchy phrase that religious folks in the USA like using to give themselves the feeling they're somehow superior. There are and have been atheists in foxholes around the world and they haven't all "realized what fake atheists they've been". Far from all atheists convert when faced with danger. That's just something some religious people in the USA like to think. I guess it makes them feel better somehow.

It's interesting how I've never heard a non-American say anything like this.

Markyyy, again, I love your line of questioning. At the very least, it will force American christians to try to project their stereotype onto other nations, and leave the door wide open for more binding questions that they know they can't answer. Imagine them trying to answer "If god is on both sides of a war, how does he choose the winner?" and "If god chooses the winner of wars with his followers on both sides, doesn't that mean that he personally chooses to kill and defeat some of his own followers?" Invariably, they will change their tune as the questions roll.

As far as I'm concerned, they set themselves up for this. They're the ones saying their god is in control of EVERYTHING, except for bad things. God has no control over that. People with free-will are in control of bad things, but everything good is because of god, even if it's done by someone who thinks their god is a crock of crap (to include people of other religions as well as people without religion).

Not everyone calls out for a Deity to save them. Some call out for their parents or loved ones.I suggest people who make sweeping assumptions of other beliefs and cultures take the time to meet some of those people before making the generalizations that all people eventually must believe a certain way in certain situations because it seems to make sense to you.

When you stare death in the face, you need the reassurance that something somewhere is watching over you. I imagine that's a universal feeling.
