HIV is a retro-virus. It uses a cells own replication mechanisms to create copies of itself. So when a macrophage (bug hunting/killing cell) "eats" the HIV virus instead of killing/disassembling the virus the virus uses the macrophage's cellular processes to produce billions of copies of itself.
