hamberger is derived from hamburg Germany and and burger is towner (towns person) it is like their home town sandwich. correct me if I am wrong but I asked the same question to my german grandfather and that is the answer he told me

It was invented in Hamburg, just like a Frankfurter was invented in Frankfurt. Also a Berliner I think is a kind of doughnut.
