A "profile" of someone is typically referring to what thier head looks like from the side.

So to "take the picture in profile" means to take a picture of someone from the side, so as to capture only one side of their head, face, etc..

A picture in profile is when the person getting their picture taken stands or sits sideways {looking straight ahead}instead of looking into the camera. Your avatar is a picture in profile.

A "picture in profile" means from the side. (not straight on where you can see both eyes of the person).
It means you can see the outline of the forehead, nose and chin of the person you are photographing.

Profile is the side view of something.
If you take a picture of someones face in "profile", you're taking a shot of either the left or right side of their face.
