Since most of the religious books were revealed to prophets who came to the middle east such as Moses, Jesus and Mohammad, therefore they mentioned most of the same prophets of the same area. However, in Islam, it is believed that prophets were sent to all nations, according to one saying there were approximately 124,000 prophets sent to various nations over time. These might have appeared as the wise men of the times and did not get mentioned as prophets in recorded history but they were probably prophets. Some people even go on to say that perhaps Buddha and even Socrates were perhaps prophets (only God knows, but thats what some say).

For instance the Quran says:
Verily We have sent thee in truth, as a bearer of glad tidings, and as a warner: and there never was a people, without a warner having lived among them (in the past). 035.024
