fresh veggies are the best. and relatively cheap.
basic whole grain bread, eggs, cheese, pasta, sauce, potatoes and rice and you have meals for days and days on v. little cash.

avoid brand names. avoid empty calories (and wasted dollars) on over packaged foods with lots of white flour or sugar that will just make you more hungry later.

for dry goods that will last a while, go to a big box store and buy in bulk. it does save money.

make a big batch of healthy hearty soup/stew from a favorite recipe and freeze it in individual baggies for easy meals. can cost next to nothing if you stick to the basics.

oatmeal makes a great breakfast becuse it sticks to you and keeps you fuller longer. drizzle some honey on top. add a piece of fresh fruit and you're good to go for less than a dollar.

dont waste your money on bottled drinks. drink water. pay for food. its a hundred times healthier too.

Spices can make ordinary ingreadients great. Steak seasoning, thyme, fresh ground pepper, chili flakes, oregano, etc are all good additions to the basics.

and invest in multi-vitamins. seriously. they rock.

Sit down and plan a week's worth of meals. Stick to the plan. Make menus that will use up fresh items like vegetables, bread, eggs and milk. Buy meats on sale and freeze them. Don't over-buy at the grocery store. Stick to your plan. Buy some of those microwavable, partitioned dinner-plates with lids. On Sundays, you can cook up something big, like a roast of some kind, with all the trimmings and make your own "TV dinners" to freeze. Most of all, when you open up the refrigerator door, don't think "What do I want to eat?", think, "What needs to be eaten?". Throwing food away can easily be your biggest waste of money...

PS
$50/week ($7/day) is pretty frugal already for a food budget for one. Bet you spend more than that if you really think about it. How many times a week do you eat out? One trip to even Micky-Dee's can cost $7.

what is your month food allowance?

check the local health food stores and places like Whole Foods. you can buy things like oatmeal, lentils, beans, rice, nuts, seeds, etc. in bulk.

as was already stated the Dollar store has some things cheap like spices, canned tuna, etc.

local fresh food markets are usually cheaper for fresh veggies than big chain supermarkets. I use fresh veggies for salads and frozen for soups and stews.

things like ground beef %87 is cheaper than 97% just drain the fat after cooking, etc. check the frozen isle sometimes you can buy salmon and other white fish cheap.

stick to your diet and spread the meals out every 3-4 hours. drink plenty of water. meals with protein and high fiber carbs and a little fat take longer to digest and keep you feeling full longer same with hole oranges

check out some cookbooks at the local library. soups and stews when made home cooked can be very healthy and very inexpensive to make

I have been living on my own since I was 16 years old so I sympathize with your situation. The best way is a more natural way.. Fruits and veggies.. They are usually rather inexpensive and food pantries give away tons of the stuff. But they also give away alot of things that are loaded with preservatives which aren't so good. Also, run your own low-budget garden.

If you eat fast food order chicken no bun, get wheat bread and lean lunch meat for sandwichs. Buy chicken breats, watch for sales, Get a water filtering pitcher so you don't have to buy bottled watch. Health food stores are more expensive so look for a health food aisle in you grocery store.
